A West Seattle, Washington, family is devastated to learn that a judge has ordered that their pet raccoon, Mae, must remain in captivity at a wildlife rehab center until a trial is held to determine whether or not the state seized her legally. According to King 5 News, attorney Adam Karp argued that Mae should be allowed to remain with the only family she has known until the trial, but Judge Carol Murphy sided with the state and ordered that she remain held at the wildlife center.

Mae was raised by Kellie and Chris Greer, who found her seven years ago at a park near the body of her deceased mother. The couple had tried to turn Mae over to a wildlife center when she was just a cub, but after failing to find one to take her in, they turned to Wolftown, on Vashon Island, and were granted permission to become a “subpermittee,”which allowed them to keep the wild animal, as long as certain rules were followed.

Unfortunately, Wolftown has since closed down and in the eyes of the state, the Greers no longer have the legal right to keep the raccoon who has spent her entire life with them. In fact, the state believes that Mae is a threat to public safety. “A first-generation wild animal may have lost its fear of humans, but it is not a domestic animal. It still presents a threat to the humans around it,” said Assistant Attorney General Senior Counsel Neil Wise.

Mae’s family worries about their pet’s well-being during her time of captivity. Before being seized, she enjoyed walks (on a leash), bath time and even camping trips. Now, she is living in a cage.

  1. Please let Mae come home….to the only family she has ever known…..let her be loved & raised by her human parents….don’t let her forget what it feels like to be be held & loved & walked and cherished….after all how many years do raccoons live…..at lest allow her to have visits with her family so she can stay in touch…..

  2. INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY! THIS RACCOON IS COMPLETELY DOMESTICATED AND WILL NOT DO WELL IN CONFINEMENT. SHE SHOULD BE WITH THE PEOPLE THAT RAISED AND LOVE HER. GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS NEIL AND GIVE HER BACK!!!!

  3. This judge is an incompetent, animal hating POS and needs to have her employment terminated immediately.Mae the raccoon belongs with her family that save her life 7 years ago and loves her dearly.

  4. I guess going after a raccoon must mean slow law enforcement in this town. This is all they have to do, go after a families pet raccoon? Now they will gave a trial and can only hope that they come to their senses and return this docile animal back to the only family it has ever known. Has not only bonded with humans in that house but other pets as well.

  5. SOME HUMANS ARE SO IN DENIAL OF ANIMALS BONDING TO HUMANS. IN ALL HONESTY, I TRUST ANIMALS BETTER THAN HUMANS. HUMANS CAN ABANDON, AND BETRAY YOU ANYTIME WHILE ANIMALS ARE LOYAL TILL THE END! IT IS VERY UNFORTUNATE THAT OUR SOCIETY FAIL TO DO WHAT’S RIGHT FOR THE VOICELESS!

  6. Is there any petition on behalf of Mae’s parents that they would be allowed to keep her home? May be public opinion can help…

  7. If these judges, who have no compassion for animals, get old….I hope they get locked in some cage in a nursing home or prison..and remember what they did.

  8. Exactly what sort of danger does this judge think Mae is to any human? She is treated like a family pet who does not run, is in a home, walks on a leash and therefore, IS a family pet who is loved and needs to be at home with the only parents she knows. How can Mae be a threat to public safety if she is kept in a home? It makes no sense whatsoever and she needs to be reunited with her family. This judgement is cruel to Mae and the Greer family. Send Mae home!

  9. It’s no longer a wild animal it’s a domestic. Spay the racoon, family pays a fine, family does environment Community service and makes town cable commercial discouraging wild animals as house pets.
    End of story.
Give the sad little house pet who is clearly socialized and huminized and bonded to the family back please.

And every body get the hell back to work

  10. Leave it t to another brainless judge to inject HUMANITY on an innocent animal. If she hasn’t been a threat to HUMANS in seven years, what possible threat would she be now. GOD KNOWS HOW MUCH I HATE HUMANS. She is not a wild animal anymore. I hope that family sues the pants off of that judge for doing this to YET ANOTHER FAMILY MEMBER.
