A faithful old dog is being hailed a hero after taking on a bear to save his owner and some of his canine friends. Last weekend, Pete an English Setter, boldly held off a black bear who was surprised by a pack of dogs who were enjoying a hike in New York.

Me & My Shadow Pets day care owner, Cathi, told Metro U.K., that her husband, Steve, was hiking with the pack of dogs on Sunday when things went terribly awry. In an Instagram post, Steve recounted what happened:

“Today we lost our brave, old man Pete. The dogs surprised a black bear just off the trail while we were hiking this morning. It must not have heard or smelled us with the pouring rain. It felt threatened and turned around. Pete stepped up and held off the bear until I could get the other dogs to safety.”

He added, “Once I was sure they were safe, I went back and scared the bear off, but Pete was gravely injured.” The badly injured dog was transported back to the main trail and then rushed to a veterinarian, but his injuries were so severe that the difficult decision was made to end his suffering.

Final words bid adieu to the brave dog:

“Run free Pete, you no longer have all those aches and pains of old age. You had a great 18 months with us running the days away like you loved.” Please light a candle for Pete and remember that fostering and rescuing a dog can sometimes save you. Senior dogs have so much to give. Love you Petey. Save me some cheese for when we see each other again. ❤💔❤”

  1. “Cathi” & her husband put Pete in grave danger while hiking in the bear’s habitat. The bear felt threatened, attacked and Pete was sacrificed because she & hubby made the stupid decision to invade the bear’s home with a pack of dogs. THEY are responsible for the poor dog’s horrific death. Dumb stupid humans!

    • I agree Nadia! If you knew or aware there are bears, you do not go! Sad! RIP STEVE, and you are a hero but you should not have been to the place where bears live.

    • How can you judge? Do you live in their area? I don’t live there, but to me sounds like this is something they do daily, walk their dogs! Bears are probably common to their area. RIP Pete! My condolences to Steve & Cathi. Thank you for giving Pete a second chance in life! He looked like a very happy boy!

  2. Those kinds of situation are so devastating. You keep thinking back, I should have done this or I should have done that, but the reality is there are no guarantees something will work. God bless you dear hero dog.
