In Des Moines, Iowa, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa’s Animal Control Division described what happened to Oscar, a Chihuahua, this week. The emaciated dog had been trapped in a kennel cage and thrown in a dumpster at 6th and Forest Avenues in Des Moines’ River Bend neighborhood. Oscar had been left for dead.

Apparently the kennel cage broke open upon impact, and Oscar climbed to the top of the trash pile, but had been too weak to jump out of the dumpster. And so he waited for help. A Good Samaritan saw him and rushed him to the shelter for emergency care.

When Oscar arrived at the ARL, he weighed four pounds; he had zero body fat, had a loss of muscle mass, hair loss and had intestinal parasites. His fur had been stained from the urine and feces he lived in while caged. Oscar suffers from severe neglect, and had he not been rescued, he likely would have died. Within the first 48 hours of his rescue, the dog regained 25% of his body weight as he was given several small meals.

The forgiving pup has been described as sweet and loving – he adores when people hold and caress him.

Anyone with information about Oscar is asked to call ARL Animal Control at 515.208.9248 or [email protected].

“Your donation to our Miracle Medical Fund provides lifesaving care and rehabilitation for the most vulnerable animals. Oscar was treated like literal trash by his previous owner, but you can give the gift of hope today for Oscar and other pets who need immediate help.

When you donate now, your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, thanks to a generous challenge from the estate of Daryl E. Behounek – that means when you donate to help Oscar, you’ll also help another animal at the ARL who needs you.
