Following the discovery of the euthanasia drug, pentobarbital, in dog food, the J.M. Smucker Company has issued a voluntary recall of dozens of varieties of wet dog food. TruthAboutPetFood.com obtained a memo about the recall which was sent to retailers.
The memo reads:
The J.M. Smucker Company is initiating a voluntary withdrawal of a limited quantity of Gravy Train®, Kibbles ‘N Bits®, and Skippy® Wet Dog Food products after learning specific SKUs did not meet our specifications because a minor ingredient may contain low levels of pentobarbital. This is not a threat to pet safety. Although the extremely low levels do not present a health or safety risk, their presence in our products is not acceptable to us.
The FDA launched an investigation into the situation after WJLA partnered with Ellipse Analytics to test dozens of varieties of dog foods. Results from the testing were shocking – 60 percent of the Gravy Train brand (which is owned by Smucker’s) tested positive for the deadly euthanasia drug. Though the levels detected were not considered to be lethal, the law states that NO concentration is allowed in food of any sort – even for pets.
There is speculation that the euthanasia drug made its way into pet food from the bodies of rendered pets who were euthanized and then used as “adulterated ingredients” in dog food.

Here’s a great idea; get all the recalled dog food and feed it to animal abusers.
I stopped using foods that have unknown “meat” products in them once I found what they contain. As more and more shelters move to EBI, it doesn’t surprise me that the euthanasia drug is being found in food that is made with this rendered “meat”. If companies would stop using rendered products, it would be the best for everyone.
