Dog’s leg severed by train, but his tail still wagged when rescued

In an incredible rescue by Animal Aid Unlimited in Rajasthan, India, a young dog had been struck by a train. Nearby village residents called the animal shelter for help. Little Spirit’s leg had been severed, and it hopeless dangled; only the small bits of remaining skin kept it attached to his body.

When the rescuers arrived, they found Spirit in a small hole near the railroad tracks. He had burrowed himself beneath a pile of garbage and must have been waiting for the pain to subside. The pain would not have passed, and had he not been rescued, Spirit would have soon died.  As a volunteer carefully tried to pick the dog up from out of the hole, he cried out in pain; his screams were utterly heartbreaking. Who could imagine how he had been suffering?

As Spirit was carried to the waiting pet ambulance, his tail wagged. Not a snarl nor a growl, Spirit knew he had been rescued.

“Nothing could stop Spirit’s incredible will to be joyful,” his rescuers wrote on the organization’s Facebook page.

At the hospital clinic, the pup was prepared for surgery. Sadly there was no way to save his leg, but learning to be a tripod wouldn’t interfere with this little Spirit’s will to live and happily wag his tail.

Check out the video, and watch Spirit’s recovery just two weeks later.

  1. OMG poor baby. Thank you for all what you do for these animals and wish that i could donate some money. But!!!! being on benefits my money is all counted for with bills to pay and shopping. So glad that it was a happy ending and that Spirit is doing well with only 3 legs. Please give Spirit a hug from me and you are all in my prayers and thoughts that includes Spirit and all the other animals that you save

  2. Huge THANK YOU to Animal Aid of India for rescuing little Spirit and giving him the medical care he so desperately needed – You saved a life and I truly hope you never give up and continue to rescue all animals that need help – there are so many in India left to fend for themselves – and Animal Aid is a hero for them all.

  3. Watching the video, I’m surprised that he was found in that hole – it wasn’t easy to see him. It was heartbreaking to hear him cry and to see the trauma he endured for who knows how long before he was rescued.
