In a rural area of South Carolina, a nine-month-old puppy was attacked by a coyote on Saturday night. When an area resident was awakened at 3:00 a.m. by terrible screams, she raced outside and spotted a coyote on top of the poor puppy aggressively attacking. The submissive pup was so frightened, he didn’t even fight back.

Fortunately the coyote was chased off, and the shivering pup taken to Animal Control for medical treatment. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC volunteered to rescue the pooch, now named Ramsey from the shelter.

“We are glad someone heard Ramsey’s cries and that he will be okay,” wrote Rescue Dogs Rock NYC co-founder, Jackie O’Sullivan. “Many other pets are not so lucky. Coyotes are out in record numbers in many parts of this country attacking and killing family pets. Please keep your pets safe.”

Unfortunately, as coyotes get more comfortable and lose their natural fear in urban areas, they are more apt to be seen prowling around in search of prey. There are still practical ways to dissuade the animals from coming into residential neighbors. Coyotes are important to our natural surroundings as they do keep rodents in control, however the animals can transmit infectious diseases including rabies, distemper and parasitic worms, fleas and ticks. Don’t ever try to be a hero – just learn the basics to protect yourself and your pets.

  • Do not keep food outside
  • Clean your grill after every use of store it in the garage
  • Don’t add meat to compost piles
  • Pick up fallen fruit if you have fruit trees in your yard
  • Keep cats indoors
  • Don’t leave dogs tied outdoors
  • Be careful with backyard chickens
  • Fences can be installed as well as fence-top rollers

If ever confronted by a coyote, never turn your back on the animal and do not run. Make sure your dog is leashed and do not turn your dog loose to go after the coyote either. Hold your hands over your head and wave at the animal to make yourself appear larger and frightening to the coyote. Run towards him and make loud noises to scare him away. Shake keys, flap your jacket and yell – “Get out of here!” If needed throw stones, sticks or rocks at them, but aim for their feet to scare them away.

  1. Well the STUPID PIECE OF SHIT ( who lives in a rural area where BELIEVE IT OR NOT) should NOT even have access to a LIVING DOMESTIC ANIMAL… what doe she have for BRAIN Matter and COMMON SENSE!!! No protective AKC Kennel with six foot wire, door, and Roof. Oh Ya!! no money so just let the poor little pup languish more than like no vaccinations neither… Do not let Ramsey got back to that place and person… What the hell is wrong in keeping him in the house ?? at night or when you are not at home… Oh !!! if you have children (please !! use a little common sense and don’t let them go out and sleep in a sleeping bag in the orchard!!!! DAH!!!

    • I agree with most all of that, and yet, although not intentional on the part of those who neglect their charges, unvaccinated animals tend to be much healthier than the vaccinated ones (that is, with all other factors being equal – quality of food, water, environment).

Despite all the serious mind conditioning we have been subjected to from the time we are small children, there is no proof that vaccines prevent disease or ended epidemics (and those who cry, from their recliners, “what about polio and smallpox?”, that is just proof that they’ve been sold the paid-for version. Epidemics have come and gone throughout recorded history, and what was really going on was not what was in the, again, paid-for newspaper headlines. If anyone is interested in what really happened, read “Dissolving Illusions” by Dr. Suzanne Humphries (can be found to read online with careful searching). I have numerous links to articles about rabies vaccine “failure” and the vaccine causing the disease. I won’t put all of them in, or my comment will end up larger than the article. And then, one other to show some of the many other diseases and problems vaccines cause. Most people don’t even know what is in them, how the ingredients cause the damage, or how many BILLIONS of dollars doctors make in repeat business from the damage that is caused.

  2. An “Area resident” chased off the coyote and heard this puppy screaming. Was that the owner or a neighbor? If a neighbor, where in the heck was the owner? I don’t understand why rescue dog’s rock has the pup. why do people keep their dogs outside. That drives me crazy!!!!!!!!!

  3. Prayers for the puppy. Too many humans have incrouched on their territory and they have no fear anymore .
