Dog nearly perished after being dyed

A darling Maltese mix nearly perished after someone decided to dye her fur purple with human hair coloring. The dog, dubbed Violet, suffered horrible burns from the toxic chemicals that were doused on her small body. Now, the Pinellas County Animal Control is hoping to educate others with her story.

On Monday, the animal control agency posted several photos of the grievously injured dog to their Facebook page and issued a warning against using human hair coloring on dogs:

Grab a tissue and hang on – we promise a very colorful ride – a tale of caution, extreme pain, incredible strength and love. Pet makeovers are wonderful – they come out smiling after a new haircut, nail trim, maybe a little bow or bandana. They smell so good, they feel so soft and they prance around showing off. Great stuff, right! We do our own hair – funky styles and colors are on the rise. Express yourself, but please do not use hair dye intended for humans to express your pet’s style

The animal welfare agency advised that the chemicals in hair dye are toxic and can cause burns, blindness or even internal poisoning. Little Violet suffered extensive burning on her body – her eyes were swollen shut, she was “limp and listless,” and in extreme pain.

Fortunately there is a happily-ever-after for this spunky girl. After three months of care – including antibiotics, IV fluids, multiple bandage changes and pain medications, Violet is feeling much better.

But her painful story serves as a lesson for all dog owners who may be tempted to “pretty up” their pet with human products – don’t, just don’t.

Did you know that if you want to get updates from a Facebook page, you have to do more than just “like” it? To get recent postings in your Facebook feed, you must also hover your mouse over the word “following” and then click “see first” from the drop-down menu. You may want to check back with your favorite pages on occasion because Facebook often changes your settings, no longer having your favorites among those to “see first.”

  1. The stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me. Why do this to an animal? Will the dog even notice or want to look like this? Owners should never be allowed to own another animal again. Thank god this dog was saved.

  2. Any one who loves their dog should know better. I hope something was done about the morons that did this to this poor baby. Maybe a stint in jail and a hefty fine will make them THINK before they do something this stupid again.

  3. Please tell me the idiot that put her poor dog thru this faced charges, a lifetime ban on owning or caring for animals and had to pay all medical costs for Violet. She should never get her back!

  4. Who in the right mind would use human dye coloring on a dog. The person who did this is SCUM and ought to be charged for cruelty and do a stint inside Shared on FACEBOOK

  5. Another example of the stupidity of humans – this was done for their overblown ego, not for the dog and they almost killed her – this jerk should be sitting in prison – some people are too ignorant to live. I hope the dog was taken away from this douchebag owner – she deserves a better life.

  6. I hope the owner is locked up, fined, beaten to a pulp….SOMETHNG for inflicting this horrible pain upon this precious pup. I am hoping the baby was removed from the idiot who had her and will find a loving, SMART person to care for her.
