The emaciated pit bull, found abandoned in the basement of a Paterson, New Jersey, apartment earlier this month, may have been there since February. According to News 12 New Jersey, investigators believe that the dog’s owners chained her up and left her to die after they moved away.

The rescue dog

The dog, dubbed Phoenix, is recuperating from being starved to the brink of death. She is in the care of the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, which is calling her survival a “miracle.” On Monday, the animal welfare agency updated Facebook followers with Phoenix’s progress:

Phoenix, who now greets her nightly visitor with a big kiss and some very excited whole-body wagging…is now weighing in at 27 pounds! More good news..Phoenix is now giving kisses to her wonderful vet and seems to be showing more trust to her other caregivers. While Phoenix still has a long way to go with learning to trust, these are absolutely amazing steps in the right direction. We are so proud of this extraordinary dog. ❤️

Cruelty charges?

According to the news agency, Phoenix’s prior owners have been identified and the authorities are “trying to track them down.”

  1. Thank god this dog has been rescued and hope Phoenix rebounds and continues to be the miracle dog that she is. Hope the police find out who left her and charge them with several charges, fines as well as extensive jail time. Criminals who should be in jail for life. Get well Phoenix.

  2. I don’t think I will EVER understand how anyone can so cruelly abandon such a sweet beautiful dog. Phoenix’s previous owners deserve the heftiest charged laid and found guilty of them. Thoughts and Prayers for Phoenix to heal well, recover and flourish with a wonderful new furever family who will adore her precious spirit.
