Dog killed while in Ohio prison training program using inmates

In Lebanon, Ohio, a dog has been killed while participating in a prison program using inmates to help train rescue pets. According to the rescue group Joseph’s Legacy, the dog had been in training at the Warren County prison and was found in a cell unresponsive.

The rescue stated the prison program was “supposed to be closely monitored by prison staff.”

” We were invited to join this program at Warren Correctional institution. Like most, we were excited to have our troubled dogs get their training and excited to help the program. Many dogs came, got trained and headed out to their forever homes. It seemed to have little issues and worked smoothly. We had volunteers regularly on site and observing the dogs progress and how the handlers were working with them.”

The German shepherd, named Evie had been at the rescue since 2015 when she came in with a broken hip after having been hit by a car. At the time she had been nursing her two puppies – one died and her surviving puppy was later adopted. Evie’s hip was surgically repaired. The dog was extremely friendly and soon was adopted, however her family had to give her up. Brought back to the rescue, it was decided if Evie had more training, she would be more adoptable.

When the rescue received the news Evie died while in the care of the prison, they became very worried. A necrospy performed on the shepherd revealed she died from blunt force trauma to her abdomen causing liver hemorrhage.

“Evie was an extremely sweet dog who had so much morel life, happy moments and years ahead of her. Confused how such an amazing happy dog can be intentionally harmed,” the organization’s Facebook read.

All dogs in the prison program have since been removed. State authorities are in charge of the investigation and according to Joseph’s Legacy formal charges will be pressed.

Rest in peace Evie.

I want someone if not several cruel, sick people to be held accountable for the brutal death of this poor girl. How could anyone kick a innocent helpless dog? And in the stomach? I’m furious and disgusted.
What is happening with this investigation? Do they know who did it? Are they being prosecuted for the murder of a helpless dog? Updates please!

While it’s a good thing when prisoners who love/respect animals can work with rescues, bond with them and train them with kindness, to help both the dog and the prisoner rehabilitate; there needs to be a much stricter screening process for those that will be allowed to work with animals, and the animals need protection at all times while on prison grounds. Naturally some evil fool had to go and insert himself into what might be a good program to ruin it for everyone else. And that poor sweet dog, after all she’d already been through in her life, to die like that. It breaks my heart terribly. People need to rethink these programs, everywhere. And if any abusive training methods are being taught, I hope that gets exposed and dealt with seriously.

WHERE WERE THE VOLUNTEERS WHO ARE SUPPOSE TO WATCH THE INMATES?
THE LOWLIFE ANIMAL TORTURING MONSTER INMATE MUST BE ERADICATED FROM OUR PLANET.

RIP Evie. These people are still inmates and there for a reason. They should have never been left alone unattended so that this wouldn’t happen. Their violence came through and Evie was their victim. Hope they find out which inmates did this to Evie. She didn’t deserve this and was returned to the shelter by a family who should have gone the extra step and found a trainer for Evie. That is all she needed but now she is gone. A lot of blame to go around.

Such a tragedy. To think of Evie having finally been exposed to a home life and kindness as shown in these pictures and then placed in a prison environment…why??? What could this possibly have offered Evie??? Most rescued dogs have instability, neglect, and even abuse in their bacgrounds and hardship to overcome and to place them into a stressful institutional environment is very unfair to the dogs, in my opinion, in addition to the trust that must be undertaken with the safety and lives of the animals in that environment. I’m sure it is scary for many of the dogs to be in such an environment and not an environment that is conducive to the needs of these dogs. I feel it is putting the needs of the prisoners over that of the dogs that are placed in these programs. I advocate from the perspective of the dog. They need stability, security, and socialization in the community. and I do not think this is in the best interest of the dogs. Rescued dogs need stability, security, and love, and socialization in a setting that is gentle, loving, and secure, and that is what will ultimately produce well socialized, adoptive dogs. Rip, Evie. Such a very sad, tragic outcome.

Did they know it was safe to leave this dog in the hands of prisoners? What did they do put this dog in the same damn cell with the criminals who are mentally sick?

Here the dog is there for a reason to help low life mentally sick assholes and now he is dead. Blame the jerks who were suppose to watch him instead of leaving him with a bunch of psycho scumbags. Someone needs to take a metal bat and smash the shit out of both the one who was to watch this dog and the POS who did it. I would be gladly be the one to do it. This is a sick sorry report that should not have happened due to the irresponsibility of another subhuman on this earth. There are not too many humans I care for only animal lovers the rest can die off this earth and this is another reason why. All of our tax money goes to feed and care for scumbags like this I say once they do a crime get rid of them off this earth.

Troubled dogs go to this prison and then find their forever home, but they left this dog and others in the hands of troubled sick minded assholes who are prisoners and they can trust them with animals? This very sweet dog got killed and it took that action to remove all the dogs. I assume they never had a problem with this before until one psycho was around. WHERE WAS THE ONE WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS DOG. DON’T THEY REALIZE THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN WITH THIS DOG AT ALL TIMES ANOTHER BUNCH OF ASSHOLES. THEY ACT SHOCKED THAT THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DEALING WITH. WHY ARE THEY IN PRISON BECAUSE THEY ARE GREAT PEOPLE? ALL OF US COULD HAVE TOLD YOU THIS NEVER THE LEAVE THE ANIMAL ALONE AND NOW WHERE IS THE DOG? HOPEFULLY THE ONE WHO DID THIS GETS TORTURED.

“Weak laws allow heartless people to murder innocent animals. With little to no punishment… But what if you could add a new rule? And punish them to 25 years in jail and a $500,000 fine. So they are too scared to hurt another animal again… would you do it?”
