In Helena, Montana, the Broadwater County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a case of animal cruelty after a dog was found on the side of the road with the word “Free” spray painted on his side.

The photo was posted on social media sites on Thanksgiving Day and initiated outrage among area residents and animal advocates. Fortunately the dog was not injured, however Undersheriff Brandon Harris reported the dog, now named Freedom, will be rehomed. The dog’s current owner isn’t responsible for painting the dog’s side, but the dog had frequently been seen roaming in the area and quite possibly, someone may have been angry.

“I’m sure is was a message to the actual owner of the dog, and I just think you went about it the wrong way,” stated Harris according to KxlhNews. “We’re there. We can come out and pick up the dog, if need be.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Broadwater County Sheriff’s Office at 406.266.3441. The responsible person can be charged with a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

  1. I’m not sure what we have to do but how the police and judges must come up with a better system or punishment. So those who do harm to others , their pets, our existence thru our service animals are dealt with a real stopping punishment and tracked. The reason for tracking is to insure they do not continue their act of violence.
