A Polk County, Georgia dog fighter was sentenced to 5o years with 15 years to serve in prison Judge Richard Sutton decided on Tuesday afternoon. Devechio Rowland was found guilty of 107 felony counts for dog fighting and 107 misdemeanor counts for animal abuse last month. Rowland faced a prison sentence of 642 years. He will also be on probation for 35 years.

According to WsbTv,  at least 107 dogs were described as “half-dead.” Disturbing video showed the dogs chained to trees nearly starved to death. Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd stated it was the worst case of animal cruelty the department had ever seen.

In 2010, Rowland was arrested on animal cruelty charges and an association with a dog fighting ring, but the case was dismissed after one of the main witnesses died.

At least 30 animal advocates were at the courthouse when the judge announced the sentence. Some of the onlookers cried while others were saddened that Rowland’s prison time  wasn’t at least 20 years.

Many of the dogs have since been rehabilitated adopted. Read the previous article here.

    • Totally agree. Or the full
642 years no chance of parole in the general population with animal advocate prisoners, and the guards not observing! Preferably with opposing gang bangers ! Dogs Lives Matter!

  1. Tears!! this is a giant step forward in ending animal cruelty. Yes it will be a fight still, but when judges and jurists start seeing what we an animal advocates see, that is a crucial step

  2. I’m wondering if any of you would send a thank you note, card or letter to Judge sutton 100 prior st. Cedar Town Ga. 30125 and attention it to his name. We need to encourage our lawmakers and law enforcers when it comes to stopping animal cruelty.

  3. HURRAY !!!HURRAY!!! A JUDGE that as A Sense of What Justice is Supposed to BE!!!! thankfully for a lot of animals that WOULD have BEEN Victims!!! Sadly for THE MULTITUDE that WERE HIS VICTIMS!!! I can only HOPE this PUTRID SCUM DOESN”T MAKE IT OUT OF PRISON BECAUSE the BROOM STICK BRIGADE Takes UP the CAUSE of his total disrespect for the LIVES of these TORTURED ANIMALS!!!!

  4. We have to complain enough for the justice system to change for all animal abusers as well as animal murderers. Call you local and state officials, regardless of their party, as most of them have pets and care about what happens to these dogs. Some are not even aware of horrible life these dogs lead and die from. Enough phone calls, and something will be done. It has only been recently that animal abuse in states is also a felony where you can receive jail time. Just keep working for these animals.

  5. 107 felony counts for dog fighting and 107 misdemeanor counts for animal abuse and he is serving 15 years in prison, why not the whole 50 years he was sentenced? Judge Richard Sutton, you dropped the ball on this one!

  6. Rowland is nothing but a coward, lazy POS who needs to get a damn job instead of fighting dogs. I still rather see this asshole thrown to a bunch of pitbulls so they can rip this low life to shreds and he can scream in pain. Scumbag hope he gets his ass kicked in prison while he sits with a bunch of animal lovers. Then he needs to slowly rot with cancer.

  7. I think the sentence is upside down. He should have gotten 35 yrs in prison and 15 yrs of probation. Does this mean if he violates his 35 yr probation he will do the 50 yrs? We can hope…

  8. 15 years in my opinion is way too light – this hunk of ghetto shit should be sitting on death row – his treatment of innocent defenseless animals is the perfect example of sewer slime – no conscience – no compassion – no heart. He needs to be treated just like he treated those dogs – like trash. 642 is appropriate – he’d live out his useless life behind bars – and 107 counts of misdemeanor cruelty is a joke – there was no misdemeanor done here – it is all felony animal cruelty. I hope this punk gets to be the victim of some predatory inmates – let him feel the terror, abuse and cruelty he dealt out to these animals – and the guards look the other way.

  9. Sorry. It is still a slap on the wrist! He should have gotten life / no parole. These dogs deserved more Until these Judges get REALLY serious about these barbarians, this kind of abuse will continue. But then, I guess something is better than nothing.
