A neighborhood dog, covered in tar, stood like a statue in Kottayam, India on Thursday after political rivals had poured barrels of tar on the road in the city to disrupt traffic. The tar spread along the busy thoroughfare and melted under the heat of the afternoon sun.

According to the MathrubhumiNews, the dog named Appu, had just been in the wrong place at the wrong time and fell right into the tar. Repeatedly he tried to get up, but each time fell again while more tar stuck to him. When he was exhausted and finally gave up, he just stood in the middle of the road like a statue.

Neighborhood residents brought the dog to a veterinary hospital in Kidimatha and referred the pup’s plight to Friends of Animals Kottayam (FRANK). For 56 hours, the hospital staff used sunflower oil to remove the tar, and while Appu writhed in agony as his skin came off with the tar, he remained calm.

Appu is still in serious condition and suffers from bad wounds. It is hope he will recover from his injuries soon.
