Just how hot is it in Arizona right now? It’s not a joke – it is so hot that an animal shelter in Phoenix has announced that it is temporarily closing down. Less than 24 hours ago the Arizona Animal Welfare League and SPCA stated:
AAWL’s main Phoenix campus WILL BE CLOSED Tuesday and Wednesday due to excessive heat warnings. Temperatures are supposed to reach over 115 degrees so we are focusing our attention on keeping all of the animals in our care safe, cool and comfortable.
Keeping the homeless dogs cool during heat wave
Staff and volunteers are doing their utmost to keep the dogs at the shelter comfortable. As reported by ABC 15 News, cooling mats and ice treats are being offered to the dogs and volunteers are taking adoptable dogs to their homes for temporary fostering until things cool off.
Reopening plans

I take it the shelter in Phoenix doesn’t have air conditioning? Seems strange if this is the case in Arizona of all places. Prayers for the dogs and workers, I hope they all can get through this.
These are the times I wish I was rich. I would have an incredibly large home where we could put large kennels in the rooms with air conditioning and I would have 100’s of rooms. Then we would have an indoor swimming pool where the dogs could play in it all day. Oh how wonderful that would be.
God bless these rescuers who are looking out for the dogs and making sure their ok.
It seems they could get funding for air conditioning. Otherwise, it will continue to be miserable and unhealthy for the animals and the staff. Love and prayers for all at the shelter!
I’m in Az and it is hot as hell. No air moving just the sun beating us up. Swamp coolers are of little comfort with the humidity. AC costs dearly and I don’t know if the shelters can pay what may be $500+ monthly to cool their buildings. Possibly more…
