Two bear cubs are orphans today following the fatal shooting of their mother. According to the Associated Press, hikers were confronted on Thursday by the grizzly Rocky Mountains in western Wyoming.

Few details

Few details about the bear shooting have been released. There was a party of three hikers who encountered the mother bear and she was shot in “self-defense.” No one in the hiking party was injured, reported the Great Falls Tribune. The shooting was immediately reported to the state game and fish department.

The orphaned cubs

As reported by the Jackson Hole News & Guide, game officials were unable to locate the two orphaned cubs when they responded to the scene.

What to do if you encounter a bear

What should you do if you encounter a bear while hiking? According to The Hiking Life, avoid making eye contact, slowly back away and don’t run. Be aware the bears will often “bluff charge” and you will need to dig deep to summons up the courage to stand your ground during the charge. If it becomes apparent that the charge is not a bluff, be sure to utilize bear spray, which can be used to ward off an angry bear.

  1. Absolutely TRAGIC. Not sure if I believe the “self defense”! In any event, I hope and pray the cubs will be okay. Regardless, DAMN hunters! Hope they will be the hunted someday!

  2. WHY did they feel it necessary to kill the mother bear? Was she attempting to attack? Or where they just such cowards they did not know what else to do??? If they are experienced hikers they should know what to do in a case like this. Now these cubs will more than likely die since these jerks killed their mother and apparently the so called ‘game officials’ could not or could not be bothered to find these little cubs. The whole story sounds phony to me – and I am suspicious about it. These idiot hikers need to take some wilderness lessons cuz they sure are lacking in them.

    • Exactly. Bring bear spray, make s little noise while hiking snd don’t bring food. Anyone with common sense knows they’re hiking in bear territory in Wyoming. If they were in a federal park it’s illegal to have a gun. So sad. I hope they find the cubs and they can eventually be released back to the wild and not end up in a zoo or circus
