A couple from Sault Ste. Marie were convicted this week of animal neglect following an investigation concerning a Boxer dog left to suffer dragging a 9-pound tumor. Kevin and Robin Hanka, both 28, were each convicted to permitting a dog to be in distress and failing to provide adequate and appropriate medical attention.

According to the news release by the Ontario SPCA, the couple appeared in a Sault St. Marie Provincial Offences Court and were sentenced by the Justice of the Peace to 12 months probation. During that time, Kevin Hanka is required to have any animals in his care examined by a veterinarian every six months and has been ordered to follow the veterinarian’s recommended treatment and care. In addition he was fined $632.

The investigation began in early September after an Ontario SPCA officer received a complaint about the welfare of a dog. When the officer saw the dog, a female Boxer in poor condition, she noted the dog dragging a huge beach ball sized tumor hanging from her hind end.

When the dog was examined, veterinarians diagnosed a nearly 9-pound tumor vascular mass on her anus. The growth had sores after having been dragged along the ground. Her overall body condition was poor and she suffered from dermatitis and ear infections.

The mass was removed by surgery and the dog recovered.

“Letting a dog suffer like this is never an option, especially when the physical ailment is so obvious,” says Lynn Michaud, Senior Inspector, Ontario SPCA. “If you find yourself in a position where you are unable to provide your pets with the medical attention or general care they require, contact the Ontario SPCA or your local humane society to discuss your options.”

To report suspected animal cruelty, call the Ontario SPCA’s province-wide animal cruelty hotline at 310-SPCA (7722), or your local police.”

  1. WOW!!! THE Judicial SYSTEM THERE must BE ANTI –Companion Pet Protection… a Shoplifter would Get a stiffer sentence, than the bastard’s that put this beautiful animal in peril and pain and suffering. Holy Cow!!! Canada SUCKS BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!

  2. Glad the courts in Ontario followed through with more than a slap on the wrist for these two people. How could you leave your dog dragging that huge growth along the ground and not think how it feels to their dog. I hope the authorities follow through on making sure they do everything the judge told them.

  3. That brain cell eating disease has struck again! Should have been stricter consequences! So happy and grateful the dog is okay.
