Imagine spending five years of your life sitting in a prison cell never having committed a crime. This has been the fate of Cooper, an eight-year-old male Mountain Cur. He arrived at Abandoned Pet Rescue in 2013 and remains there, unwanted. Although Cooper is in the largest no kill shelter in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and well cared for, he is tired of always being passed over and watching other dogs get adopted.

Besides being the largest no kill shelter in south Florida, Abandoned Pet Rescue (APR) is a 501 (c ) 3 founded in 1996. Their mission is to rescue, and shelter abandoned, abused and neglected pets. They rehabilitate them and find placement for them.

Cooper was brought into Abandoned Pet Rescue by a volunteer who found him as a stray.  He is described as a bit of a challenge for some pet owners because he is not animal friendly. APR has had many trainers work to socialize him with other dogs, but no success. On a good note, once he trusts a person, he becomes extremely affectionate and loving.  He spent some time in a foster home with a family with kids and did very well with them.

Cooper was involved in one bite incident at the shelter. APR does let potential adopters know this. However, it is strongly believed by those who have known and worked with him that the stress of being in the shelter accentuated the bad behavior. According to one of the kennel staff members who has worked with Cooper for the time he has been there, “Cooper is a dog who just wants to be loved and love someone back. I believe he’s just confused with how to deal with the stress of being a shelter dog. In a home he will flourish with someone he trusts.”

Due to Cooper’s hunting nature, he has a very high prey drive and lots of energy.  Due to this and his unsocialized past, he must go into a home with an experienced handler who has no other animals. Cooper is a handsome, smart, loving boy who’s been patiently waiting 4 long years for a home of his own. He just needs to be the only pet and be with a responsible, patient owner.

Please come meet him!

  1. Cooper can become a dog that is better socialized with the right owners and training. reconditioning him will take time, but it can be done

  2. I must applaud Abandoned Pet Rescue for keeping Cooper for so long – this being a No Kill Shelter at least he is safe, fed and taken care of – hopefully, some kindhearted person who has the ability to rehab Cooper will show up and adopt him, give him the humane training he needs in addition to a safe loving home. Cooper deserves it.
