A climber from North Lanarkshire, Scotland is being blasted by critics on social media after he left his injured dog to die a slow, painful death on a Scottish mountain after she collapsed during a hike.

According to the Daily Mail, Paul Finnegan had been hiking along the 3,073 feet Beinn Squlaird mountains with his 12-year-old border collie, Meg when the dog collapsed and lost the use of her legs. When a storm began and the wind and rain violently tore through the rough and dangerous terrain, Finnegan and his friend said they could no longer carry Meg and abandoned her. The pair said they had no other option.

A mountain rescue team sympathized with Finnegan’s decision to leave Meg, but did not say it was either the right or wrong choice. Social media, however has had a different view and have accused Finnegan of being “heartless and a coward.”

On Facebook, Karen Mills posted the sad news after a five-day intense search to find the dog:

“The owner and his friend appeared on the hill at 2pm and set out on foot to their last know location from that fateful night and I received a simple message from them stating they had found Meg and it wasn’t good news. We haven’t had any more contact about this since and as you can appreciate, everyone who I’ve been liaising with and sharing the work load on the mountain, are as gob-smacked as I am. I am not casting aspersions or making assumptions…this is what has happened.

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart, that I share my last update, that Meg is no longer with us. I’m sorry it is not better news. It’s a devastating piece of news after days of hard work, community, well wishing, support and team work.”

The posts kept coming – calling the dog’s abandonment “pure cruelty” to raging and sad. In an attempt to mitigate the flood of criticism, Finnegan’s family members responded:

“Paul never left Meg for dead. Paul had no signal and tried his hardest to carry her. Between him and his friend he carried her for as long as possible while falling and fighting against the wind and the rain.”

Despite claims that Finnegan never went for help or searched for Meg, the post from his relatives disagreed and stated that Finnegan has had to cope with his decision. Still some basic questions remain unanswered. Why would any responsible dog owner take a senior dog on a grueling hike up a mountain? Surely there were health signs – perhaps arthritis? Astute owners can see the changes in the condition of their dogs as their best friends age. Why didn’t Paul Finnegan pay attention to the signs?

A Justice for Meg group has been created on Facebook in order to give everyone a place to discuss their thoughts.

Rest in peace Meg.

  1. Wow what a weakling.. dude don’t be out hiking if you aren’t in the physical shape to do it.. I carried a friends 59 lb bulldog 16km through forest and down cliffs when the dog had injured her leg.. I had to do it I didn’t give up there was no other option.

    • You are absolutely right this man should not have even been on a hike and then to take his senior dog people have no brains

  2. There is ALWAYS another option, he just didn’t look hard enough to find it. Shame on him, Meg would never have abandoned him the way he did for her! Live with THAT the rest of your sorry life.

  3. I sure Meg was frightened and confused. not understanding what she did wrong. The family is just as heartless.
He should never have taken her, but since he did, he was responsible for bringing her back. So he and his friend save their own miserable neck while his dog suffers alone. that is wrong and disgusting. The saddest part of all is that if this man or his friend had been injured and couldn’t go on, Meg would never have left their side.

  4. “We come into this World as Brother’s None Walks His way Alone! What we bring into the world of other’s WILL come back into Our OWN”!! Meg should NOT have been left to die afraid and alone… Finnegan WHEN :YOUR time comes… May it not be a pleasant Passing!!!

    • I agree with you. I would never abandon an injured family member: human, canine, feline or equine….. that poor precious little treasure wondered why she was left alone to die afraid and in pain….. I just know that her POS “so-called human” will burn in Hell forever for his cruelty to her…… let’s hope he gets there ASAP, after dying a terrible death alone, in pain and afraid…..
Meg, I know you are in Heaven. Please look for MacKitty and he will welcome you into his “snuggle buddies club”!!!!!!!!! May you RIP among his loving friends…..

  5. Your a fucking piece of shit you take your 12-year-old dog up to a mountain and you can’t carry him down you fucking weak piece of shit you deserve all the bad negative you and your family go fuck yourself

  6. Death wish for that pathetic dog killing scumbag Paul Finnegan.I dare this pathetic POS to meet me face to face as I have something for this bastard!!!! OH YES!!! Come on arsehole I dare you to meet me!! An eye for an eye!

  7. If Meg was a human instead of a dog, they would have never left a human on the mountain to die alone. They would have gone to all extremes to save the human but since it was a dog they left her. Two adult humans couldn’t save a 12 year old dog. How worthless and selfish the human race is. Karma do your stuff and soon.

  8. I have no idea how this man can live with the memory of what he has done: I would have perished on that mountain with my injured companion, as the very thought of abandoning her would never have entered my mind…

  9. And he didn’t have the balls to stay with his family member when she got hurt?? Real HUMAN there. Why didn’t you stay on the mountain with her?? Real “sub-human” there. Hope she haunts you for the rest of your life. Hope Karma has a GOOD TIME with you.

  10. I would have found some way to either bring Meg back down with me or I would have found some way to take shelter with her. I would not be able to live with myself if I had just walked away. She was a loyal family member and he just left her, all alone and afraid to die by herself. What he did was horrible. Epic fail as a pet owner and human being.

  11. He can try to explain away his cruel actions for his companion, but we ALL know there is NO explanation! May this disgusting act haunt him for the rest of his miserable life!

  12. Paul Finnegan your judgement bringing Meg a 12 year old dog ANYWHERE you couldn’t carry her home makes you unfit for ALL future pet ownership up to and including goldfish to say nothing of fathering any children or holding a job with ANY responsibility. You should be required to skip over male on all future applications and write in human garbage.
