Clever dog saved from icy pond

A clever dog, who found himself in a frightening predicament in Marshfield, Missouri, was able to help himself when a good Samaritan came to his aid. Jeff Mann, the pastor of the CrossBridge Baptist Church, noticed that his neighbor’s dog was stuck in an ice-covered pond in his backyard.

Mann donned a pair of boots and grabbed a rope and headed onto the ice to help the cold and frightened pooch. After multiple attempts to get the rope to the dog, he was met with success. Amazingly, the dog was clever enough to grab hold of the rope and hang on while Mann pulled him to safety.

The entire rescue effort was captured on video and posted to Mann’s Facebook page – it has been viewed nearly 60,000 times since Friday. Mann recounted what happened:

Neighbor’s dog got in my pond this afternoon. The pond is aerated. So there is no ice in the middle. This poor guy almost drowned. Selina Mann saw him from the kitchen window. He is a smart dog. I’m glad I didn’t want to take a polar bear plunge which I thought I was about too. The ice was cracking.

Great job Jeff Mann – and kudos to the clever pup who was able to help himself out of a scary situation!

Did you know that if you want to get updates from a Facebook page, you have to do more than just “like” it? To get recent postings in your Facebook feed, you must also hover your mouse over the word “following” and then click “see first” from the drop-down menu. You may want to check back with your favorite pages on occasion because Facebook often changes your settings, no longer having your favorites among those to “see first.”

  1. Thank God for that man and that smart dog grabbing the rope. It shocks me that this dog is in trouble and the guy asks for a life jacket and instead of doing that the woman remarks, you told me to video. To tell you the truth, if I was in trouble, videotaping what happens would be less important to me than saving my life. Maybe next time she can put the camera down for a second while she runs and get life saving equipment.

  2. How did this man know that the dog would grab onto a rope? That would never be my first thought. I would have been flat on my belly, inching my way across the ice to try to pull the dog out. You would have to know in advance that the dog would do this. Perhaps this has happened before? I want more of the back-story.
