The K9 who was partnered with a Newman police officer who was killed in the line of duty, is being retired early. Five-year-old Sam was partnered with 33-year-old Corporal Ronil Singh, who was killed while conducting a traffic stop in the early morning hours on Wednesday.

As reported by ABC 10 News, Sam is being relieved of her police duties so that she can live with Singh’s family. Newman Police Chief Randy Richardson stated:

“Sam is already back home with the Singh family, where Sam belongs.”

The cop killer

The authorities know who killed corporal Singh, but the man’s name has not yet been released. Officials have stated that the suspect is in the country illegally. Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson explained:

“It’s not appropriate for me to identify (the suspect) until we absolutely are 100% certain that we have the right name.”

As reported by CNN, surveillance video captured images of a heavy-set Hispanic man wearing “a zip-up hoodie with an Ecko logo on the sleeve and a thick silver chain around his neck.”

The slain officer

Singh had been with his department since July 2011 – he was a native of Fiji who has been described as an “American Patriot.” The department is devastated by the loss.

Sam was with her partner on the night that he was killed. Chief Richardson explained why the dog is being allowed to retire to live with Singh’s family, “I will not take another family member from them.”

  1. Bless the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department for allowing Sam to stay with the only family she has ever known. I know she will be a blessing to them, having a part of their husband/father’s legacy. I hope and pray they find the POS that killed Officer Singh, and may he pay dearly for what he did.

Obviously, Sam is one of those police K-9’s that has been “helicoptered” “slammed to the ground” “kicked”, “left in an outside pen” to the point they are abused, as some would have us believe.

    • And of course the departments never engage in flowery P.R. to promote themselves, and they never lie (?). Like our department, where Cpl. Morton (one of the more enthusiastic abusers) was quoted in the media saying about his K9, Basko, “I love him like a son.” That’s what the public reads, and so that’s what the public believes.

Or, how about when a journalist, doing a promotional piece on the Bakersfield K9 unit, slipped up and wrote this about a K9 in the process of running and leaping toward the padded suit:
“Johannes Grewe, a police service dog trainer, pulls hard on a blue rope tied to a pinch collar around Nitro’s neck. The animal squeals and careens in a heap on the patchy grass.”

There was some feedback on that, including from me, which was immediately followed by a full news editorial piece, written by a police sergeant, which was all public relations, including,
“I DO NOT RECALL anyone making the complaint that our canine partners are abused…I CANNOT EVER RECALL any bleeding, suffocation or vocal cord injuries associated with the use of the pinch collar…I CANNOT THINK OF any training-related injury to any of our dogs that required veterinary care.” He also claimed: “Due to the amount of muscle mass and hair around our dogs’ necks, traumatic injury is virtually non-existent..”

I think most people know about the use of “I DON’T RECALL.” It leaves wiggle room in case someone happens to come forward with video or some other documented proof.

And, of course, he ended the article with ” “Positive reinforcement, like praise, food and play are much more common and more effective techniques. We become very protective of our K9 partners, as they also are often our best friends and a part of our families.”

He only forgot to add that they all love their K9’s “like a son.”

      • What I would expect from you, even though I never did mention that lying editorial piece out of Bakersfield here before. And also typical that you’d write (on another post) “I don’t believe the airlines one bit,” but you believe every denial and justification emanating from the police about their sub rosa institutionalized torture of K9s.

  2. What a bitter sweet gesture on the part of this police chief to do> I am sure the family will appreciate the comfort from Corporal Ronil Singh’s partner. K9 Sam.

  3. Thank you’s, prayers and blessings to the Sheriff’s Department for doing what is right. Once again, there are angels in our midst. More prayers and blessings to the two officer heroes who will be partners again in heaven one day.
