Charges have been dropped against a North Carolina woman who stepped up to take in pets who were in danger from Hurricane Florence. Tammie Hedges, of Crazy’s Claws n Paws, took in cats and dogs from families in areas due to be impacted by the massive storm, and now local officials charged her for operating an unregistered shelter, practicing veterinary medicine without a license and soliciting a donation of tramadol.

On September 17, Hedges surrendered 27 dogs and cats to Wayne County Animal Services, but told authorities she felt she needed to help the animals brought to her during the storm. Hedges is alleged to have treated some of the sick pets with the antibiotic amoxicillin and topical antibiotic ointments.

“The goal was to make sure they were not out there drowning. We had an elderly couple, they were evacuating that afternoon, and there was no way they could take 18 animals with them,” Hedges stated.

According to CbsNews, on Tuesday, Wayne County Prosecutors stated their concern over the situation had been for the well-being of the animals.

“The removal of animals from a building that failed to meet suitable standards for license as an animal shelter and away from the control of the defendant who has previously been censured for the unauthorized practice of veterinary medicine was a prudent decision made with the best interest of the animals in mind,” stated Wayne County District Attorney Matthew Delbridge .

It will be up to the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board to determine if any charges or action will be taken against Tammie Hedges.

More than $40,000 has been raised on a GoFundMe page in support of what this rescue woman did for those who cannot speak or take care of themselves.

  1. Some governmental agencies will do ANYTHING to get money!!!! This appears to the the case here. As Dr McCoy from Star Trek so eloquently stated — “the bureaucratic mentality is the only constant in the universe”.

  2. North Carolina is a VERY f****d up state. The authorities there will ONLY PROTECT men. All you have to do is take a look at the history, they let men rape, beat and maim women, children, infants, dogs, cats, even horses. If a woman so much as looks at a sheriff or police officer wrong, they arrest her, then rape her and throw her in a cell like she’s trash. Yes, I have personal knowledge of this crap. I pray God inspires the GOOD people of North Carolina to take a stand for their women, children and animals. Sad and pathetic ass wipes there are nothing but devil spawn.
