Wayne Pacelle, CEO and President of the Humane Society of the United Stated (HSUS), has resigned amid sexual harassment allegations. According to USA Today, an internal investigation revealed that there were three sexual “misconduct” complaints against the man who has been the face of the animal-welfare agency for years.

On February 2, the organization issued a press release about Pacelle’s departure:

“The Humane Society of the United States announced that it has accepted the resignation of Wayne Pacelle, as president and CEO, effective immediately.  Wayne has served in this capacity since 2004, and previously served for 10 years as the organization chief political and communications operative.”

Rick Bernthal, Chairman of the Board of The HSUS, stated, “The last few days have been very hard for our entire family of staff and supporters. We are profoundly grateful for Wayne’s unparalleled level of accomplishments and service to the cause of animal protection and welfare.”

Pacelle denies the allegations against him – he has indicated that the sexual misconduct complaints were part of a “coordinated attempt to attack” he and the HSUS, reported the Washington Post. The allegations, and subsequent failure of HSUS to remove Pacelle from his positions, led to more departures from the organization. An additional seven board members have resigned from HSUS, reported the Huffington Post.

According to the HSUS, Kitty Block, an attorney, is taking over as the acting president and CEO of the organization.

To get recent postings in your Facebook feed, you must also hover your mouse over the word “following” and then click “see first” from the drop-down menu. You may want to check back with your favorite pages on occasion because Facebook often changes your settings, no longer having your favorites among those to “see first.”

  1. Read this yesterday on the New York Times….and was SHOCKED !! The first I heard about this situation……I HOPE we get to read his side of the story….as supporters of the HSUS (as many of us are) we deserve to hear both sides! I truly HOPE this was not a hit-job from anti-HSUS people to get him and the HSUS!!!

  2. the Hsus does not give any money to shelters. in fact, the ceo has stated many times he wants to stop breeding of any animals and that most of the general public do not know how to take care of the animals they have, in other words, we are stupid. I give my money and time too local shelters.

  3. I pray Kitty Block is a true animal lover and will act in the best interest of the animals that need to be the focus of her best efforts to assure them a future.

  4. As far as I am concerned this is no great loss – Wayne Pacelle is one of the reasons I do not donate to HSUS – since I found out that so little money actually goes to animals – and way too much to CEOs, attorney’s and PR promotions. This organization has millions and millions of dollars and they could easily help shelters that are struggling BUT do not. Hopefully, whoever is appointed as CEO & President will come through and do what the HSUS was founded for – help animals, not upper management.
