Police are investigating two disturbing acts of animal cruelty in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City where two cats have been found sealed inside buckets and abandoned on the street. Neither cat was able to escape, however luck and astute detective work by animal advocates saved their lives.

Both cats are now safe and being treated at the Animal Haven Shelter. The executive director of the shelter posted the following details on social media Friday evening after the discovery of the second cat:

“SOMEONE DUMPED ANOTHER CAT IN A BUCKET, and we need your help. You may remember when we recently found Sage, a young cat, sealed in a bucket and abandoned outside our shelter. Around 7:45pm yesterday, we found another bucket left next to the public trash can with a cat inside, as if left for garbage. Luckily one of our staff members recognized the bucket, brought it inside and pried it open. This poor kitty is in bad shape and, needless to say, is terrified. We have contacted the police, but we’re asking that everyone in the vicinity of our shelter in Soho PLEASE keep your eyes out for any suspicious buckets or containers like the ones in these photos! If anyone recognizes the person in this video, contact us immediately. And if you are ever desperate to surrender an animal, please reach out to us directly…”

Video: (Check the background to see someone placing the bucket out with the trash) The buckets had been sealed tightly, and pliers had to be used to open them.

Both cats are recovering from skin irritations and injuries. The first cat has since been named Sage and was rescued from the same kind of bucket in November. He had been peeking out from the top of the bucket when a volunteer at the rescue noticed him. On the rescue’s Instagram account, Sage’s frightening story was told:

“…when morning kennel went to move what appeared to be just an empty bucket on the side of our building near the back door, they were shocked to see a tiny eye looking back at them. Yes, believe it or not but someone left an innocent cat in a bucket outside our door overnight. Luckily, the sweet thing, who we have named Sage is safe and sound now but we can only imagine how scary the ordeal must have been. Also to make matters even worse the bucket was left next to our trash so it’s a miracle that Sage wasn’t picked up by our garbage collector and never seen again…”

The New York Police Department is currently investigating.

  1. Great job of rescue . To ID the perp, his ugly face needs published. Chinese? Korean? Luckily the cat wasn’t boiled alive and eaten.

  2. We had two litters of feral kittens we found this spring on our acreage We took them in to a rescue and they were neutered and spayed and vaccinated … we kept three and they keep our barn mouse free.. they are so friendly and enjoy our company and the extra food and treats and the company of our first two Manx Ladies that are now 12 years old and still the rulers of the property …I can’t imagine how someone Could just sentence these little guys to suffocation in a sealed contain… This scum is downright evil….
