A blind, senior dog miraculously survived the bitter cold in the window well of a family’s home in Minnesota. According to KARE News, Buddy, a 13-year-old Goldendoodle, had wandered away from his home five days before he was found.
Buddy’s owner, Patsy Sumpter, told KARE that she had let her dog out on Wednesday night…and he vanished. She commented on her distress in the bitterly cold, snowy days that followed, “It’s been just the worst five days of my life.”
Buddy somehow wound up not far from home in the window well of Emily Raguse’s Eden Prairie home. Raguse walked by a basement bedroom which she rarely ventures into when she observed the senior dog curled up in the snow, on the other side of the room’s window.
Buddy was rescued from the snowy window well and was obviously cold, and lethargic, but miraculously alive.
His grateful owner said, “I prayed and prayed and it’s just so miraculous that they found him.” Adding, “I don’t think he would have made it one more night.”

I’m sorry, but – as a Minnesota resident with SIX rescued companions – I fail to comprehend how ANYONE continues to let their cherished canines outdoors without constant supervision…. ESPECIALLY a blind one! Even in the warmest of Minnesota’s sumer weather, I NEVER allow them out – even in my 6′ chainlink fenced yard – without being in attendance at all times!
Straight temps here have been below zero for HIGHS for weeks, with wind chills exceeding double-digits below!
I am SO thankful that Buddy survived his ordeal, and at the same time incensed that he was so endangered in the first place!
My thoughts as well!
That was my first thought. We have a fenced yard, but I still monitor my dogs when they are out. When I have an older dog, I go out into the yard with them – you never know when they might need some help. Especially in severe weather. I’ve had to help dogs back into the house. I’m so happy the dog was found in time, but hope the family learns from this event.
I agree – to allow a blind dog to wander out with no supervision is an invitation to disaster. This ‘owner’ is very lucky he survived – and should be supervising him whenever he goes outside.
Always be outside with your pet when you let them go potty, day or night since anything can happen to them, and we have read too many times when this happens. Waste 5-10 minutes of your time watching your pet and you will never regret doing that, even with a fenced in yard.
Or better yet, put them on a leash if You don’t have a securely fenced yard. How hard is that?

Well I can venture to say Buddy will probably be watched much closer from now on!!!! He was a very lucky little dog, and it sound like his owner was pretty stressed out … I hope she learned a valuable lesson… We all make mistakes and fortunately his owner NOW has another chance as does Buddy and too feel it was a divine intervention the neighbor looked out that window well… GMG how Lucky She Did!!!
I would have a blind dog a long cable run when putting it out. I live in a rural area, I only let my dogs run free when they are with me, the rest of the time they are hooked on a 10-foot cable on a run when they go out anytime day or night.
I am glad she found her dog alive after 5 days living in the cold freezing weather that was a miracle.
What a stupid person to let a blind dog out without supervision! She got lucky this time, let’s hope she’s learned something but probably not. 🙁
