Shelter speaks out after blind, senior dog found wandering

A Virginia animal shelter is searching for a new family for a blind dog and his “guide.” According to the Richmond Animal Care and Control six-year-old Blue Dozer (a pit bull), was surrendered with his buddy OJ (a blind, 12-year-old Dachshund), because their owner became homeless.

The shelter stated:

These bonded best friends need to be adopted together. OJ is blind and depends on Dozer to show him around. We can’t stand the cuteness and kindness these two share. Anyone willing to love a bonded pair of perfection? Come see us #weareyourcityshelter#bestfriendsforlife #twinning

Many people have offered to help the bonded friends stay with their prior owner, but that option is apparently impossible. The animal shelter explained:

Thank you to everyone that is offering to help the owner secure housing or find foster for these dogs. RACC is the safety net for cases such as this. We offered multiple options in an effort to prevent surrender and the owner wanted us to take custody of the dogs and find them a home together quickly. We will not share her private details but she is not able to provide care now and will not be able to provide care in the future. We supported her final (very hard) decision and assured her that these dogs will be loved at RACC and we will work to find forever placement.

  1. If only there were organizations that kept owners and dogs together and helped them find a home. So much of this is going around. These owners love their dogs but have no choice

    • Apparently THIS PERSON!!! did have numerous options BUT chose NOT to use any of them>>> If you read the story completely … There Shelter is in my book a DAMN GOOD and VESTED organization… THEY are standing behind these two very bonded and dedicated buddies!!! I have dachshunds and very versed in the numerous and sometimes difficult behaviors … I think the person that was caring for both these little ones is CARETAKER BURNED OUT!!!

  2. Such a sad story and pray they get adopted together so they can remain the friends that they’ve become. People loose their homes as well as their loved pets, so hopefully someone or rescue will take them. They look adorable together.

  3. ANYONE CLOSE BY, PLEASE GIVE THESE 2 BONDED A CHANCE. I HAVE 2 BONDED SENIORS I ADOPTED FROM AN ELDERLY COUPLE THAT COULD NOT LONGER TAKE CARE OF. IN FACT, 1 IS SAME BREED AND THE TWO ARE JUST SO BONDED, THEY ARE TOGETHER ALWAYS AND MANAGE TO HAVE THEIR BODIES TOUCH NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE. ONE OF THEM IS DIABETIC WHICH NOW IS MY NUMBER 3 DIABETIC DOG THAT I ADMINISTER INSULIN TWICE A DAY. I HAVE 6 DOGS TOTAL, AND I LOVE THEM ALL WITH ALL MY HEART AND SO GLAD I AM ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF THE 2 SENIOR BONDED OR I DON’T THINK THEY WILL MAKE IT IF THEY ARE SEPARATED. BREAKS MY HEART TO EVEN THINK ABOUT THEM BEING SEPARATED IF I DIDN’T TAKE THEM BOTH.

    • Why do you always type your comments in capital letters? Do you think that makes your comment stand out above the others?
Well it doesn’t. It is just annoying.

      • Oh for CHRIST SAKES GET A LIFE!!! I use CAPITAL LETTERS lots of times too. ARE you so ANAL as to let something like that disturb you… I hope you don’t have someone in your home that PEES on the TOILET SEAT AT TIMES!!! LIFE IS TOO DAMN SHORT FORE YOUR QUIRKS!!!

  4. Glad you are taking these two, sometimes people just don’t have a choice, doesn’t mean they are happy about that, just that they are trying to do the best they can with what they have been dealt.

  5. if these 2 best buds like cats, i will foster/adopt them. my 2 senior rescue cats loved my dog (another rsscue) till he passed away. we have much love to share, plus a yard ????

  6. I COMMEND THIS SHELTER !!!! HANDS DOWN BECAUSE THEY ARE COMMITTED TO FINDING A PLACEMENT THAT WILL BE A CARING AND LOVING ENVIRONMENT.. Dachshunds if cared for properly live a very long lives!!! Scrappy our oldest rescue was almost 20 when he passed… we had him for almost 10 of those years.. and yes he was “scrappy” till the day before we took him in to our vet . We have one now “Penny” who is almost blind and she 15 … the other “wieners” all take their turn being at her side when she goes outside and laying comfortably on the Kool-a-roo… Wonderful care givers that they are… I wish OJ and his companion luck and love.. thank you again to the animal shelter that is A CARING and COMMITTED RESCUE>>>
