Bittersweet rescue when love isn’t enough: Fiona could not hold on

Fiona’s tiny, endearing face, while at Carson Animal Care Center in California, caught social media’s eye. Who could understand how a 14-year-old Chihuahua could be roaming the streets as a stray? It had been suspected that Fiona’s irresponsible and heartless owner just didn’t want to spend any money helping her in her most critical time of need.

A volunteer wrote:

“This sweet angel needs help now. She has some heart failure possibility and having some trouble breathing; she is being treated by the Vet. She needs a foster and rescue now to save her life.”

On Wednesday evening, Fiona was rescued by Leave No Paws Behind. Although she was able to relax and sleep soundly all night, Thursday morning’s veterinary examination at the Pet Doctors of Sherman Oaks revealed serious health problems, but rescuers  hoped and prayed for the best. Sadly, wishes don’t always come true:

“This is such a sad morning as I must announce with a very heavy heart that sweet little Fiona’s body could not hold on. At 7:45 last night my phone rang and when I saw it was our vets, my heart sank,” wrote the organization’s founder Toby Wisneski posted on Facebook.

Fiona suffered from end stage heart disease and pneumonia. She went into cardiac arrest and all efforts to revive her were futile.

“I was able to find peace through knowing that for at least 24-36 hours she was able to find a little relief, a warm and comfortable bed and arms lovingly wrapped around her, letting her know how much she was loved and that her life mattered. If it is true that animals live only in the moment, then she left us knowing she was not alone, love and cared for her whole life… Rescue is so bittersweet.”

Rest in peace Fiona.

  1. I wish nothing but bad Karma for Fiona’s POS owners because they dumped her like trash when she needed them the most. I have a geriatric Yellow Lab with multiple health issues and it’s my honor and privilege to care for her as she nears the end of her journey with me. Thank God that dogs live in the moment……RIP Fiona – I’m so grateful that you had a few hours of love and you left this world knowing that people cared for you. I’m sure you wished it had been your so-called family.

  2. So sad but not surprised to hear this. At least she was out of the shelter. Thank you, Toby, for all you did for Fiona. Run free, little girl, at the Rainbow Bridge. Your suffering is over. You are loved and will never be forgotten.

  3. To the person who abandoned this lovely elderly dog: you are the epitome of sub-human, evil, selfish scum. YOU could have crowd funded for her vet care, called SPCA or any other number of rescues to reach out for help. Apparently, you are not only heartless, but LAZY…shame on you! I hope you do not have children, because if you can do this to an innocent elderly dog, God only knows how abusive and neglectful you are of children.
To the shelter who found her and did your best to get her help: may you be blessed 1000 fold for your selfless act of kindness.
To Leave No Paws Behind: you NEVER disappoint, may God bless you 1 million fold for continuing to fight the hateful, arrogant lazy idiots by showing how it’s meant to be in God’s world and His love of His children and animals. I hope this will inspire others to support your love and work for animals with many donations.
To Pet Rescue Report: thank you for your continued hard work to make us ALL aware of what’s going on in the pet and animal world. Many of these things would still be hiding in the shadows of violent abuse and neglect of God’s creatures.

  4. RIP precious little baby. You were loved during your last hours and I am glad you received this comfort instead of dying alone, in pain, afraid and worst of all, unloved…..
How anyone could have neglected and abandoned you (with your precious little face) is incomprehensible…… Senior furbabies are absolute treasures and deserve the best……
I know you are in Heaven. Please look for MacKitty and he will welcome you into his “snuggle buddies club”!!!!!!!!! May you RIP among his loving friends…..

  5. RIP Fiona, you’re free now, run across the bridge and be happy and loved. As for the POS owner, I hope when you’re old and sick your family throws you out in the cold. May your soul rot in hell when you drop dead alone on the street from starvation and lack of medical condition. This is the cruelty you visited upon Fiona, except in your case, nobody will attempt to save you.

  6. My heart goes out to the people of “No Paws Left Behind” in there loss of this precious little girl Fiona. May she rest in peace and know there were many people pulling for her and sending their love.

    • With a name like yours, I’d keep my mouth shut. Yours is a nasty name which probably matches your nasty looks, nasty disposition and nasty soul. Oh wait – what soul?!?
      You’re a troll
      With no soul
      Go climb a pole
      And shut your pie hole!

  7. My heart is broken. I know this precious little girl is running free with other pups. To the heartless maggot SOS who abandoned her, I won’t stoop to the level in which you slither but I hope a thousand scorpions crawl up your carcass and sting you to death.

  8. Thank you, LNPB, for giving her a comfortable end of life memory. You are the best. I wish her story had a happier ending. But it was not to be. RIP little precious Fiona.

  9. O this angers me to no end – Fiona was dumped by some hunk of maggot puke owner who did not want to pay for her medical care and this is the end result – Fiona deserved MUCH better than to be treated like a disposable object – if not for ‘Leave No Paws Behind’ she would have died in that piss hole of a shelter.
