Big game hunter shot and killed while stalking captive-bred lion

A Croatian big game hunter was shot and killed during a hunting expedition in South Africa on Saturday. Pero Jelinic, whose reputation describes him as having “hunted everything that could be hunted in Europe,” had killed one captive-bred lion and had taken aim at a second lion when a “stray” bullet struck him.

According to the Total Croatia News, police are now investigating the incident as a possible homicide. The property where Jelinic, 75, died, raises lions in captivity to be hunted as trophies in a ‘sport’ has been widely condemned and is called “canned hunting.” In South Africa, there are more lions held in captivity than lions that live in the wild. Although owners of these farms try to say they do not hunt and kill lions, most of these breeders sell their stock to be shot dead by rich trophy hunters from Europe and North America. The lions have been held captive all their lives, and when released to an enclosed area have no idea that man is their mortal enemy. Quickly they become the innocent victims of rifles, handguns and crossbows. Not much hunting required!

In January, the Dallas Safari Club released its position on Captive Bred Lion Hunting stating:

“Few animals in Africa, or anywhere, are as iconic as the African lion. As hunters we understand the benefits of lion hunting. Dallas Safari Club has stated, and firmly believes, that in the fight to save lions, hunters are their best allies… In South Africa, captive bred lion hunting is legal. Several professional hunting associations and hunting conservation organizations have commented on the negative impact that captive bred lion hunting has on them and the hunting community in general…”

The organization ends with the statement that captive bred lion hunting is not a practice that is in keeping with its values of ethical and fair chase hunting.

Humane organizations view lion hunting as cruel and unnecessary. The Humane Society of the United States remains highly opposed to the hunting of any living creature for fun, trophy or sport. When all avenues have been exhausted where it becomes necessary to kill some wildlife, it should be performed by responsible and humane methods

According to a close friend of Jelinic, the wealthy hotel owner from the island of Pag, wanted the head of a lion “to crown his rich hunting career.” The hunter had been staying at Leeubosch Lodge, a four-hour drive from Johannesburg; 40 miles from the border with Botswana.

  1. Animals being raised around humans to be slaughtered in canned hunts is one of the most despicable activities filth does to make money off the killing of any animal. It’s even worse when the animals are endangered, as these lions are.

That bastard had already MURDERED one endangered lion and was going to kill another. Why? Because he wanted to hang the head of a DEAD ANIMAL on his wall!! How the hell can anyone look at something like that and think it’s okay?

It isn’t even a hunt when you take a gun and kill an animal that way: it’s the slaughter of animals who are USED TO HUMANS and look at them as PROVIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn’t feel sorry for that miserable POS if it happened in the wild. He got what he deserved. I just wish it had happened BEFORE he killed the first victim, and that every animal on that farm did the same thing to the scum who run the place.

  2. THIS IS THE KIND OF NEWS I LOVE TO HEAR. JELINIC YOU DESERVE THIS AND HOPEFULLY THE LIONS RIPPED YOUR ASS APART. I WOULD RATHER SEE HIM RIPPED APART WHILE HE WAS ALIVE. YOU AND ALL YOUR TROPHY HUNTER FRIENDS DESERVE THIS WONDERFUL TREATMENT. LEAVE HIS BODY THERE AND THROW IT TO THE HOGS. GREAT NEWS JELINIC YOU ARE DEAD MEAT. I HATE ALL YOU TROPHY HUNTERS. I THINK THEY SHOULD CUT OFF HIS HEAD AND HANG IT ON THE WALL OF HIS WIFE AND KIDS. TROPHY HUNTERS ARE SICK MINDED BASTARDS WHO DESERVE TO BE KILLED WHILE THEY ARE TRYING TO KILL BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS. LEAVE HIS ASS THERE SO IT CAN ROT.

  3. Whoever killed this POS deserves a medal, a badge of honor. Pero Jelinic got exactly what he deserved. He can rot in Hell now. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

    • Agree with you!!! I know this POS will burn in Hell forever for his cruelty……. hope he enjoys his eternal life!!!

I feel terrible for those poor tragic lions (habituated to humans & see humans as “friendly”) who are easily murdered…..

  4. Couldn’t be Happy with ONE and just had to Shoot another. Can’t say I would weep over his demise however!!! Live by the Sword, Die by the Sword. As for the Dallas Safari Club!!! A bunch of Wealthy Globe Trotters, although I am PLEASED to SEE that other Organizations are in agreement that this is NOT in the LEAST SPORTSMAN LIKE!! Reminds me of shooting domestic animals in a pen for sport… If you are going to Hunt DO want Hunt means::: JUST THAT HUNT!!! Track your Prey, take it down with one shot, dress it our YOURSELF carry the meat and hide back Don’t discard it in the field to Rot. Don’t just cut off the head, horns , tail, or whatever the Hell you want and let someone do your job, or leave the animal in the sun to Rot!!

  5. Totally against this practice! If he needed a lion head to complete his “collection” why go after 2???????? Sorry for him losing his life but Karma works in mysterious ways.

  6. It’s a great Day!! When I hear the another Hunter was shot & Killed. Hooray for our animals. One more evil CRUEL KILLEE DOWN MORE TO GO!!!! RIP POOR INNOCENT CANNED LION!!!????????????????????????????????????

  7. Hard to believe that in South Africa, there are more lions held in captivity than lions that live in the wild. And supposedly they don’t kill them, but do sell them to places that have canned hunts. Horrible that these places use innocent animals and claim it is a sport when the animal is raised in captivity and not afraid of humans. Bad enough that this takes place in Africa, but in our own country is disgusting. Hope they can find a way to close these places down right now. This guy’s death is justice for the animal he was trying to kill.

  8. This is hunting at it’s lowest! I will shed no tears for the “hunter” who sees fit to practice “captive bred lion hunting” and gets shot in the process! I chalk it up to “karma”! I hope his need for the “head of the lion” as a trophy was worth it!

  9. Karma is a bitch. But I would pay a lot of money to do a canned hunt on all the low life evil Hunters that kill for trophies. See how they like being unable to escape seeing something familiar and then a bullet slams him in the head. I would definitely hang the idiots heads on my wall and use them as a dart board. No one has the right to kill for fun or sport and decides what lives and dies. God created everything on the planet and we all deserve to live in peace. Freaking asshole got what he deserved.

  10. About time there was good news. Poetic justice for all of the innocents he killed, when he took that bullet. Big brace hunter. LOL. BTW, they should mount his noggin

  11. AWESOME!!!! Anyone who raises these animals just to be “Killed” Is as low as they come!!! Anyone who can shoot them is even lower than low!!!!! I am so glad he was killed, serves him right!!
