In the Lorain Police Department Doc Rick Broz is a police and humane officer as well. On Monday evening, a big black dog chased a woman onto her porch. Broz was called in to investigate; thinking how hard could it be to find a big black dog in the white snow?
According to the Facebook page of Broz, the dog was quickly spotted running near Oberlin Avenue. The scared pup ran into the nearby alley next to a partially fenced area and decided to stop.
“…I get out and start my routine,” the seasoned dog rescuer writes. “He’s not aggressive at all, but very skittish… and I’m seeing bloody paw prints in the snow. He keeps his distance but doesn’t run off. Mr. Squeaky gets his attention, but still won’t approach.”
Broz then starts offering the dog some pepperoni which he eats as he tentatively comes closer and closer. The officer opens up the car door and as the dog approaches, he panics when he spots the leash. Still Broz is worried about the bloody paw – not knowing the extent of the animal’s injuries.
“There’s a lot of blood. I don’t want to resort to Happy Juice due to the cold and his blood loss. He finally walks up to me, sits and lifts his paw to shake … and my hand is now bloody.”
“Was he asking for more treats or trying to tell me he’s injured?”
For the next 20 minutes, Broz gently pets his new friend who clearly didn’t trust the leash, but finally acquiesced and was placed in the truck where he met up with the county animal warden for authorization to treat the dog’s injury.
“He [the dog] lets me wrap it with a pressure dressing and we take him to Dr. Woods at Lorain Animal Clinic. He was a real trooper. Let me carry him in so he wouldn’t leave bloody paw prints everywhere.”
And on the examination table, all the dog wanted to do was cuddle with Doc Broz as the dog’s paw was treated and dressed. On Tuesday, he will undergo surgery to repair the damage and clear out any possible infection. He wears no collar nor has a microchip, and is estimated to be a year-and-a-half of age. As to his breed, he appears to be a Rottweiler and Labrador retriever mix. If not claimed by his owner, this boy will make an awesome companion and will be available for adoption.
Many thanks for rescuing this pup; if only there were more officers with as much patience and compassion. Share this story hoping others will read it and follow this shining example of rescue.
