A neglected mini horse – no more than skin and bones, had been found wandering the streets in South Carolina. Darlene Kindle, founder of Carolina Equine Rescue and Assistance stepped up to help the ailing little Sammy with the assistance of Molly.

Initially, there wasn’t much hope for Sammy’s recovery, but Darlene wasn’t going to give up even though the silver dappled mini was at least 100 pounds underweight and one of his hind feet dragged behind him. After a veterinarian checkup, doctors agreed Sammy did have the will to live, and perhaps Molly, the golden retriever at the rescue had been listening.

“Molly is your typical Walmart greeter. She loves everyone including all the animals we have on the farm. She especially loves the minis; she can reach them much easier,” Darlene wrote on the group’s Facebook page as she posted a video that has truly gone viral for all the right reasons.

Check out the video here:

And she continued:

“Sammy the mini that she is comforting just came into CERA’s program. He is nothing but skin and bones and scared. Molly truly has an exceptional sense of knowing when one of the animals doesn’t feel good or sad. So she very gently introduces herself. This is her job and she is very good at it as you can see. Please follow Sammy’s progress on our Carolina Equine Rescue & Assistance page. Sammy has a long ride of rehab to go and I will keep everyone informed.”

No one knew if Sammy would even survive the first night, but he did even though he continues to face many challenges. Sammy will need to be castrated and have his teeth floated. He also has bilateral locking patellas that have slightly improved with care and good nutrition, but he may need surgery to improve the quality of his life.

The good thing is he has someone to cheer him up everyday. Good girl Molly!

  1. Animals communicate to other animals in such amazing ways. This gentle dog is a calming factor I am sure and knows exactly what to do and how to comfort others. Hope Sami will continue to thrive and with Molly around I am sure he will.
