A mountain lion cub that wandered into a small bakery in the Sierra Nevada Mountains town of Pollock Pines was euthanized by officials from the Department of Fish and Wildlife on Wednesday.

According to the Facebook page of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, an employee had been in the store when the baby lion cub walked into the store.

“You hear stories of Firefighters called for cats stuck in trees… We got called for a lion stuck in a business.”

The cub, estimated to have weighed 50 pounds was stated to have been in need of medical intervention the post read. Deputies monitored the situation until authorities from the Department of Fish and Wildlife could respond. The cub was tranquilized and transported to a nearby wildlife facility for treatment. As the officer tried to place a hand on the cub, it would only momentarily raise its head to look and then laid back down.

There have been no details provided as to why the cub was euthanized, except to state he was killed “due to its medical/health condition.”  According to the San Francisco Chronicle, a representative from the department, John Traverso, stated the cub was only four or five months old, was severely emaciated and dehydrated.

Between 4,000 to 6,000 mountain lions live in California. Most times the animals are cautious around humans. Rest in peace little guy.

  1. Why did u do that put him back in the wild he could have lived he would not hurt anyone all u needed to do is put him bAch to his mother evil creeps who did this horrible crime poor lion Rest In Peace assholes who did this bh

  2. So sorry that this mountain lion cub wasn’t helped to be able to at least be raised in a sanctuary. Being dehydrated and emaciated, regardless how severe, this animal should have been given a chance to bounce back. Easier for Department of Fish and Wildlife to have him euthanized than to try and save this animal. Probably lost it’s mother and may have been wandering aimlessly due to being so young and not having the training to hunt for food for himself. Sad what humans have done to the habitat of these animals and then they end up like this. We need to protect these animals for before we know it, they will be completely gone from this earth.

    • I agree Adrienne, no good reason at all for euthanasia, so it wasn’t – it was coming I’d blooded murder. I’m always suspicious when they don’t immediately give the full details and give sketchy words instead. RIP precious little buddy.

  3. there was no need to kill that mountain lion. it was sick. with help it could have been better and put in a sanctuary.
    rotten people/

  4. Common sense is not so common…… You can fix lots of things, but you just can’t fix stupid…….

Honestly, I am very concerned for our future…… (paraphrased): Ghandi states that a society is judged by how it treats powerless members……… we are in serious trouble……

Why wasn’t this poor baby treasure sent to a wildlife rehabilitation center? There, he could have received the specialist care he required…… Oh, I guess euthanasia was the “cost effective” solution……

These Fish & Game officers are NOT veterinarians and should NOT be making the decision to “euthanize or save”…… all obviously injured or ill animals recovered by Fish & Game officers should be sent to veterinary clinics for proper evaluation by trained specialists.

I feel badly for this poor baby: humans failed you BIG-TIME!!!!!!!

RIP precious baby, You did NOT deserve to be killed….. please look for MacKitty in Heaven and you can RIP amongst loving snuggle buddies…..

  5. Didn’t look emaciated to me. Chance (the dog who was deliberately starved) looked emaciated, but not this young lion. They could probably have gotten it some care, and it would have been fine.
