Animal control officer enters plea for cruelty charge

A former animal control officer for Manatee Animal Services has pleaded no contest to an animal cruelty charge stemming from the heat stroke death of a dog who was accidentally left inside of a van. According to the Bradenton Herald, 36-year-old Fredrick Browning has admitted that he forgot the dog in the van and has stated that he was “not in his right mind” because of an upcoming vacation.

The tragic situation

In May 2017, Browning returned to the Manatee County Animal Services shelter with three dogs; two were deceased. Browning forgot the female, brindle colored dog inside of a cage in the animal services van after he unloaded the two dead dogs.

A career change

Browning was sentenced to 12 months probation and 25 hours of community service – he no longer works as an animal services officer, or with animals at all. His attorney, Brett McIntosh, stated:

He spent the last 15 years protecting animals … doing the job most people wouldn’t want to do and seeing animals in the worst conditions. Forgetting is not a felony. Forgetting can be the basis of the misdemeanor charge which is why we accepted that.”

  1. He has probably done this before but remembered the dog(s) were in the van. This time, not so lucky and got caught. He should have switched jobs long ago as dealing with dead and live dogs possibly had and effect on him? Who knows what the reason is but a dog died due to what he did.

  2. After 15 years, he KNOWS better. I would be more accepting of this from a newcomer, being overwhelmed with so much to learn and do on a new job. BUT, 15 years? NO EXCUSE! His negligence KILLED AN INNOCENT and already mistreated dog. He takes the dead ones out FIRST? That makes me VERY suspicious, as COMMON SENSE would indicate getting the LIVE animal in the temperature controlled building FIRST, then remove the dead dogs. He’s a monster, PERIOD! Throw his ass in a hot van for 24 hours, be done with this selfish maggot! Dogs in the shelter NEVER go on vacation, yet that’s ALL he cared about. I’d like to beat his ass for this, but that’s okay, God WILL punish him accordingly.
