In Laurens, South Carolina a starved and abused 16-month-old Mastiff named Champ continues to defy all odds. Less than one week ago,  Rescue Dogs Rock NYC were alerted to Champ’s desperate plight and immediately jumped in to try and save his life.

“His heartbreaking story is that he is the victim of a breakup,” the rescue’s co-founder Jackie O’Sullivan posted on the organization’s social media page. “… since ‘he was not her dog’, she fed her dogs but not Champ.”

The emaciated pup has continued to fight to survive. His preliminary prognosis was critical. He had not been fed for at least 30 days and left tied up outside to suffer a slow, torturous death. Fortunately, a concerned neighbor contacted Animal Control. The dog was rushed to an emergency veterinarian for life saving treatment and since transferred to a specialty veterinarian hospital where he continues to receive 24/7 care.

As recently as Friday, his blood still had not been regenerating and more transfusions were part of his treatment. Over the weekend, Champ has made some impressive improvements, and his blood work has been holding steady at normal values.

“If it drops again, he is still not able to produce on his own, but so far so good,” Jackie O’Sullivan, co-founder of the rescue posted early Monday morning. “He also remains on a couple GI protectants to heal his stomach and GI from the ulcers caused by the hookworm infestation.”

It is perhaps the inspiration of the day that has been making animal advocates cheer. Although Champ is not out of the woods and because of the damage done, it will be a long process until Champ is better, he was standing; he even took a few steps with help.

Elizabeth James, the woman accused of starving Champ, has been issued a citation and arrested for animal cruelty. She is currently out on $15,000 bond.

    • i TOTALLY AGREE SUE. I STARTED WORKING ON A PETITION THAT I HOPE CAN BE PRESENTED TO DANNY VERDIN IN S.CAROLINA LEGISLATURE, IT RE-CONVENES IN JANUARY TO CHANGE THE LAW IN THIS KIND OF CASE TO AT LEAST ONE YEAR IN JAIL and PAY ALL THE MEDICAL EXPENSES CAUSED BY THE VIOLENCE INFLICTED ON AN INNOCENT ANIMAL. Bastard! i hear she apparently has a long Rap Sheet.

  1. My hearts just aches for this poor defenseless pup, how can this person be so cruel and hateful, and where is the boyfriend who left him there? I sent prayers for a good recovery and hope he finds a good loving home.

  2. The Will to Live !!! An Inspiration to Us All!! Only her Parents could possibly Bail this Beyond Evil Bitch OUT!!! She actually deserves ” TAR & FEATHER”S ” I would place her with the Child Molester’s as she Lower than Low!!!! She should be placed on a “dingy” no food and salt water to drink and dropped off about 2 thousand miles from land!!! Add a few Great Whites to the area surrounding her and let Nature Take its Course!!! Slow and Horrific like she Appears to Enjoy…

  3. This story started my day this morning…and what a happy start!!!!The very best to you Champ(very fitting name) and a very big thank you to Rescue Dogs Rock Rescue!!!!!Happy life darlin!!!!!!

  4. There will be a special place in hell for her. She should be chained to a tree and left… FOR GOOD!! God Bless you Champ!
