When an emergency plea went out in Houston earlier in the week after an animal advocate spotted a dog in  dire need of help, advocates rushed to help; the stray dog’s head had swollen to at least twice its normal size as he wandered through the neighborhood scavenging for food and relief from his pain.

On her social media page, Laura Jean cried out for help:

“SOS!!! Dead dog walking he wouldn’t come to me and I was only pushing him into traffic. Thanks to all the cars who didn’t stop who could’ve helped me get him to safety. He was last seen going into an apartment complex and I gave my info to some residents. One said he is usually around but in the back. I was unable to find him. If anyone can dedicate some time to look for him, please let me know

This dog will need foster, rescue and lots of pledges if he is found again. Southeast Houston – 77048.”

In less than one day Gus was caught and Houston K-911 Rescue rushed the dog to the Vergi 24/7 Veterinary Hospital where staff stated it was one of the worst cases of neglect and cruelty they have ever seen. His condition was critical, but he was stabilized and placed on intravenous for hydration with heavy pain medications and a rigorous course of antibiotics. After life saving surgery, it became clear that Gus needed more specialized care, and on Friday, Gus was rushed to the Texas A&M Small Animal Hospital.

During surgery to revise the scar tissue damage suffered from a shoelace tied tightly around his neck, Gus started to lose a large amount of blood and the surgeon opted to stop the operation. He was administered a blood transfusion and is resting comfortably until his medical staff will make the decision when the last surgical procedure will be performed.

“The good news is that most of the tissue has been removed, probably around 2/3 of the surface of the scar tissue,” the rescue group posted on their Facebook page. “The top part of his neck was easier to revise the scar tissue because there was less vasculature and lymphatics to try to dissect them.”

“The not so good news is the remaining area is where the vital arteries and veins are located. That area is still restricted and as such still poses complications.”

Gus’ condition remains critical; his lust for life however has not diminished. Once again, we witness the heartbreaking reality of abandoned and abused dogs in the Houston area. Make a difference and report any animal cruelty or neglect. Had it not been for Laura Jean, Houston K-911 Rescue and all of the volunteers and animal advocates coming out to help, Gus would have been just another sad statistic.

“We appreciate all the encouraging words and support for sweet Gus. We thank the wonderful doctors and staff at Texas A&M Small Animal Clinic

  1. If you ever find those responsible for Gus’s condition, part of their punishment should be a dousing if what they did to him! And keep them in jail without access to food or water except occasionally and no doctor to care for their injuries until they reach the same point as poor Gus!

    • Poor Guss you are a real hero you are truly full of life, love and now happiness all my Warriors I’m sure want to say Hello and send all their love I don’t remember if you still have a surgery yet or if you have already been through it anyways you are always in all our prayers for always and on Warrior on

  2. Please keep us all posted. We care. Hang in there, Gus. The scum that did this needs turned in to everyone. The vets, the saving groups and the courts. You can be a hero and turn this sewer scum in or do it anonymously if you need. Someone out there needs their due. Contribute a few bucks if you can. It all helps.

  3. I hope whoever did this to that innocent dog suffers everything bad known to man; disease, starvation, pain, agony, etc. I hope their skin rots and drops off their body. I hope they have a life filled with pain and suffering. And I hope they get ostracized by people because they’re not a human being; they don’t qualify.

  4. PRAYERS FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL ANGEL…..Shame on Texas!!!!! So called “humans” saw this angel in this condition and did NOTHING!!!! KARMA
