Meet Mani. According to his family, the eight-year-old dog is loved, however most viewers have accused the owner of animal cruelty.  In a village in southern India, the dairy farmer named Thangavelu attaches a cart to his dog, made with lightweight pipes, and loads the cart with two large milk jugs that he travels around delivering milk to the local villagers twice a day.

According to the video from Caters/AP News, Mani makes his milk deliveries, much to the delight of the children and adults. The dog also carries groceries for his family. The person filming Thangavelu with his dog, stated Mani even pulled his daughter’s wedding carriage.

Mani was rescued by his family when he was just a few days old and learned the family trade by following his owner on his twice daily route. At the end of the day, Mani receives a bath and is rewarded with biscuits and milk.

Social media comments are nearly all in agreement that  the video shows the dog is being abused. Dogs aren’t made to haul heavy loads. One can only imagine how the dog’s back must hurt. Even his face looks stressed and miserable viewers state. Comments such as the following express the urgency for animal cruelty prevention laws.

“That dog has about 45 pounds. He is not supposed to carry more than four or five pounds. Those cruel people who claim that they love their dog, should use their brain and think… if that carriage is heavy for them, how on earth could be ok for a 35 pound dog? Shame for those heartless people.  The dog has a very expressive look. This dog hardly can cope with the situation, and look at his ears. Unhappiness and pain… shame!”

  1. This dog must care about his family and I guess for what it is worth, they care about him, but not enough to stop loading him up twice a day with a heavy cart. Eventually the dog’s hind legs will give out and then what will they do to him? Retire him and find a replace or make him work until he physically drops dead.An oxen or mule would have been a much better choice to use for manual labor like this.Hope enough animal rights groups make him feel shamed for him to actually change this behavior. Rescue groups in India are quite good with treating abused and stray animals.

  2. I think there is a better way. My heart goes out to this dog. I would adopt this dog tomorrow my heart is breaking right now. A dog is to be loved, bathed, take a walk in the park, go buy an ice-cream cone 🙂 sleep on the couch what ever he wants but this twice daily is to much for me to see. Mani face shares a thousand words. omg someone do something.
Please keep me posted on this dog please [email protected]

  3. I agree completely this dog is carrying and pulling too heavy a load, but what can really be done about it? It is in India where all animals and most females are abused, too. Our country, even if they could moved to act on this, (doubtful) could not dictate to India how to enforce animal protection laws in their country. No one can verify this dog was helped or any of this story is very true. I would like the writer of this story to respond to my comments. I believe I have a valid point. What is the point of pushing and pulling people like this?

  4. I really feel for this poor dog. Look at him struggling to pull the milk. Twice a day for 6 years is to much for any animal. He’s so sweet and shouldn’t have to deal with this. Please find another way to deliver milk to the villagers. He should be running around getting belly rubs and lots of love from his family.. Stop this abuse now PLEASE !

  5. All you stupid people please just get a clue or go away. You apparently have no idea what abuse really is and just cling to your subjective standards.

Just a FYI, carry weight is NOT the same as pull weight. You can pull much more than you can carry. And, pound for pound, dogs can pull more than humans (by a lot). This is not abuse… this is giving a dog exercise, purpose, and a chance to be praised by the owners he loves so much and the villagers.

Now I would call it abuse IF those people knew what arthritis is and which the dog has in his back legs and forced him to work. That’s why it looks like he is struggling and not because the load is too heavy. It really is time for him to retire though.

    • People just voicing their opinions. He is struggling due the hard work and his age.
At this point get a stronger animal or person do this job or even better let the villagers come to them to get the milk and only go to those unable to make trip.

  6. Animal abuse. Omg that is a dog not a horse or donkey. Its supposed to be loved not made to work like this. That dog has to have a bad back. Someone please do something for this poor abused dog
