Days ago, a wire cage full of cats was dumped in the snow in Campbell County, Virginia. Someone had left a dozen cats and kittens to die in the cold.

The Friends of Campbell County Animal Control recounted the terrible situation to Facebook followers on December 13:

It was a scene from FROZEN last night at 5 p.m. when our Animal Control Officer got the call that an oversized wire crate with a dozen felines of varying sizes had been left in a snowy field on Red Oak School Road, and the cats were in distress and needed rescue.

AC Officer Labryer found cats and kittens suffering in the frigid temperatures:

Upon arrival, she knew lifesaving measures were needed for several of the cats and kittens. Four six-week-old kits had escaped through the wires, were laying in the snow, and were not moving; three juveniles had also managed to squeeze out and were in distress. The four adults and two juveniles remaining in the crate were soaking wet and shivering.

The rescued cats

It is a mystery who abandoned the kittens and cats, who are described as “loving, gentle and very social.”

The volunteer-run Facebook page wrote:

They used their litterboxes faithffully. They loved to be held, and cuddled. They give kisses, and knead our soft clothing when we hold them. These were someone’s beloved cats! Were they stolen? Are they part of a custody dispute? Did someone pass away and leave them behind with no caregiver?

Information needed

Anyone with information about these abandoned felines is asked to report it!  Tips can be made to the Campbell County dispatch number at 434-592-9574; ask to leave a message for Animal Control.
