An elderly California woman and her beloved dog, Maggie, survived the Woolsey fire, but they have little else – no home, no belongings, nothing. The pair are temporarily receiving care and shelter at a Red Cross Shelter – but soon, they will need somewhere else to go.
The difficult situation
97-year-old Ruth Cook has no family in the area reports ABC 7 News – and it is difficult for her to find somewhere to stay because many shelters will not allow Maggie to stay with her. But people do want to help…evacuee Ari Alexemburg told the news agency:
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles said they were going to come down, two rabbis are coming down, so I made some calls, put my foot on the ground, and we’ll see if we can take her from ground zero to beautiful surroundings.
Though Cook’s future is uncertain, she knows that there are people working to help her and her dog.
The devastating fire
Cook is not alone – the massive wildfire, which is now 100 percent contained – destroyed over 1600 structures and burned nearly 100,000 acres. Three lives were lost in the blaze and now there are worries that mudslides could impact the area with the loss of vegetation.
In northern California, the deadly Camp Fire is now 75 percent contained. The blaze has claimed at least 80 lives and more people are missing. Over 150,000 acres were destroyed and approximately 13,000 homes burned in the blaze.
