In Williams Lake, the B.C. SPCA seized 46 neglected dogs ranging in ages from puppies to adults. The breeds include American Eskimo, border collie, husky and Samoyed crosses.

According to the organization’s newsletter, Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer for the BC SPCA, says the dogs are highly unsocialized and fearful.

“The dogs were seized because of lack of shelter, poor sanitation and inadequate veterinary care and are now in care in several SPCA shelters. They are on a long road to recovery, adoption wouldn’t be for some time,” Moriarty stated. “These dogs are terrified of human contact but we are doing everything we can to address their psychological distress through anti-anxiety medication and other treatments. At this initial stage we’re focusing on reducing their emotion distress to the point where they can eat and drink and we will move forward step by step from there.”

The dogs are scared of human contact and will likely need specialized foster and permanent homes. A SPCA veterinary specialist in behavior will be working with the dogs, but it is unclear if some of the dogs will ever accept close human contact. At this point, it is unknown where the dogs are being treated, but when some are ready for adoption, they will be at the shelters in Kamloops and Okanagan.

Moriarty says the BC SPCA will be recommending animal cruelty charges to Crown counsel in the case.

  1. I think the BC SPCA should go much further than to ‘recommend’ animal cruelty charges – this should be automatic – whoever is responsible for the conditions and the abuse of these dogs is nothing more than vermin puke and has proven it – to make these animals so afraid of humans shows that they were not only neglected they were mistreated. Do NOT give this inhumane idiot a slap on the wrist – they should be held as a prime example as to what will happen to animal abusers.

  2. Recommend charges? REALLY??? YOU SHOULD INSIST AND then lock them up, fine them and ban them from EVER owning another animal for the rest of their useless, worthless, life!

  3. Go after and prosecute those who did this to these poor dogs. To cause these dogs to be so fearful has to be due to what these scum did to them. Beautiful dogs and there are people who can help them recover from all they have been through. Police, do your job and throw these things in jail forever.

  4. WHAT THE HELL HERE!!! These individuals at British Columbia SPCA ( ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THE EXPERTS IN ANIMAL RIGHTS, CARE, AND TREATMENT) RIGHT!!!!!! If not CHARGED and ADDRESSED the PUTRID BASTARDS that allowed the conditions of these BEAUTIFUL DOGS to DETERORIATE TO THE POINT OF HAVING TO BE TAKEN TO RESCUES WILL INDEED “HAPPEN” again with ANOTHER multitude of animals… THE BCSPCA NEEDS to see that the PUKES responsible for this are PROSCUTED and NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! have ANY FORM of ANIMAL in there possession EVER!!! PEROID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
