In Shamong, New Jersey, a woman was arrested on Wednesday after New Jersey State Troopers discovered 44 dead dogs packaged in plastic bags and stored in freezers throughout the home. Donna Roberts, 65 has been charged with animal cruelty.
According to the Monmouth County SPCA, detectives from the Red Lion State Police barracks accompanied officials from the Burlington County Health Department to inspect the property located on Oakshade Road. There authorities found 161 living dogs and the 44 dead dogs. Evidence of animal cruelty had been observed. In the home, investigators found feces and ammonia smells so strong that some responders became sick and nauseous.
Four of the dogs were in critical condition and were transported to an emergency veterinarian hospital. The other living pets were evaluated on the scene and treated by the Burlington County Animal Shelter.
The Monmouth County SPCA and St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center including other area shelters are caring for the dogs.
Roberts was charged and released with a pending court date.
