If you have ever wondered where those cute puppies seen in Petland stores come from, here’s one strong possibility. On Saturday, 24 puppies were confiscated in South Fort Meyers, Florida from a hot van where they had been stuffed in tiny cages and transported with no food or water. The puppies were of various breeds.

According to NbcNews, the van originated from Missouri and had been en route to the Petland store in South Fort Meyers. An investigation continues into consumer complaints about puppies dying soon after they were purchased.

The puppies were found in filthy conditions and have all been taken to nearby veterinarian hospitals. Authorities also found improper documentation for the dogs, incorrect microchip information and the van was not licensed to cross state lines. Missouri  tops the list for problem puppy mills, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Kansas tied for second place with Ohio and Pennsylvania not trailing far behind.

In October 2017, the Center for Disease Control issued a warning about campylobacter – an infectious disease that causes diarrhea, vomiting and fever. The illness is spread from puppy to person through dog feces and urine. Research indicated 55 people nationwide had been infected with the bacterial infection and 13 people fell ill in Florida. The virus had been connected to Petland including the store on College Parkway in Fort Meyers. At the time, Petland’s corporate headquarters issued a statement urging store staff and customers to double their practice of washing hands after handling any puppy or its surroundings.

Why not rescue a puppy? Go to your nearest shelter, and if you’re looking for a particular breed, there are breed specific rescue organizations willing and ready to help.

  1. When you buy from a pet store you are promoting the abuse of these pups think about it if you love animals don’t purchase from a pet store

  2. How many times do we have to say ban puppy mills and don’t purchase your best friend in a pet store. There are so many homeless dogs sitting in shelters waiting for a caring family or if they are lucky a rescue org. would step in, provide medical attention, and find them forever homes.

  3. Don’t you think its time authorities seriously crack down on these despicable so called ‘pet stores’ that purchase from deplorable puppy mills and put these hell holes out of business permanently?? Apparently this dump called ‘Petland’ is using puppy mills and foisting these innocent dogs on unsuspecting consumers who are being deceived thinking they are getting healthy animals when in fact these dogs are full of diseases, uncared for, and neglected – it is way past time for ALL states mentioned in this post be investigated for their cruel use of puppies only for profit – ALL puppy mills nationwide should be shut down permanently – when will someone in authority step up and DO SOMETHING?

    • I agree with you! Puppy mills need to be put out of business or made to clean up their mills and comply to the laws for ethical treatment of these animals. Or new laws made for the mills to abide by for ethical treatment for any animals in their mills like vet care and better housing for these poor animals. I would rather adopt from my local breeder and know what I am getting by meeting the parents of the puppy I am adopting.

  4. Why is it that those who can change the laws and stop this brutality are the most ignorant or greedy people. This needs to stop and it begins with banning puppy mills everywhere.

  5. I wish there was a way to ban all backyard breeders….. there has to be a way to shut these hell holes down. These “monsters” who just raise animals to breed and sell are too damn lazy to work…so these poos animals are breed over and over and when they no longer can have babies….they are basically tossed like trash.
Backyard breeders have no heart, no soul……
