UPDATE: “On Leslie’s original post it says ‘MAX IS SAFE WITH Rockstar Rescues! Please make donations via PayPal at [email protected]! Thank you Ryan Bing.”

In Houston, Texas, a young owner was forced to surrender his dog to the Harris County Animal Shelter. No one really knows the entire story, but the unfair pit bull restrictions play a major role into this tragic situation – how many landlords refuse to allow any of bully breeds?

For five years, this young man spent his life with Max, and according to volunteers at the shelter on Friday, the two were extremely bonded. Max looked up at his owner with pure love and loyalty and “trusted his owner to make the right decisions for him.” His owner did try to find someone to take care of his dog; sadly no one stepped up for Max.

“Unknowingly to Max,” posted animal advocate Leslie Ysuhuaylas on her Facebook page, “someone who has never met him, already made the decision.”

Tragically, the young man, barely able to keep his composure smiled with his dog for the last time as he prepared to leave his best friend behind. As the owner left crying, while holding his girlfriend’s hand, they will see another day and another sunrise. That future, however is unknown for Max. He is a bully breed and a surrendered pet; owner surrenders are the first to be euthanized.

For information on Max, refer to PetHarbor listing #A480442. “My name is Max. I am a male white Pit bull terrier. The shelter thinks I am 5 years old.” For more information about Max, contact Harris County Health and Environmental Services at 281.999.3191. Please share Max’ plight with approved rescue organizations, friends, family and social media contacts. Sharing saves lives.

Please note, it has been posted Max is in need of a foster home for the next two weeks.

  1. How about trying to help owners who would keep if possible? Would it be possible to at least screen owners to assess if they have thought of all optins?

  2. This is so unfair. Please don’t let this dog die I’m sorry Max you lost your family and I only hope you find a forever home.

  3. This type of situation is the saddest. Too many dogs being dumped by owners who couldn’t care less. Here, Max has a loving owner and is obviously bonded with him. Sharing and sending prayers. The best solution would be to find a way for the two to stay together. At the very least, Max needs a new – loving – home.

  4. This is not fair! This young man with his best friend and your making him give him up so can euthanize the dog. This is so wrong. But, others can tape mistreat their dogs and they get a slap on their hands. Something needs to be done to protect this precious dogs. Pit Bulls are not mean if they are not taught to be. God Bless you my friend. My heart breaks for you and your friend. ❤

  5. This is obviously a well adjusted dog and an owner who took very good care of him, if they have exhausted all efforts to keep him perhaps they don’t know what else to do, owner seems young and distraught. This is a dog that is easily placed, there must be a rescue or foster for this poor boy! Everyone is willing to spend thousands on medical bills but won’t step up for just a simply well trained dog that has had bad luck! Please share to rescues and fosters, this boy deserves it! Death he doesn’t deserve!!!

    • I don’t know why you think this is a dog that is easily placed, over eight hundred thousand pit bulls lose their lives in American shelters every year. They are the most euthanized breed in America. They are NOT easily placed at all!

  6. A home is safer with a beautiful dog like Max. I have 3 dogs in my home, and that is all I can have. Please someone help Max.

  7. I guess I don’t understand, you have a dog for 5 years and all of a sudden he has to get rid of him, Why? What is the story? The landlord changed his mind all of a sudden? He moved someplace where the dog wasn’t allowed? Praying Max finds a new home, I really am getting so sick of the BSL crap!

  8. Why are owner surrendered the first to be euthanized? Euthanizing ANY dog is SICKENING!! I’m pretty sure that God did not create and bless us with companion animals just to be needlessly killed! And killed by the MILLIONS in this country alone! So heartbreaking and not a solution for homeless dogs,ESPECIALLY since every dog out there that find themselves in horrible situations is a direct result of some stupid, assinine human!! Humans need to fix this awful problem because humans have created this problem!! Outlaw ALL puppy mills for starters, since all they do is add to the over population of dogs and cats and are nothing more that legal torture chambers for dogs!! I’m sicken over this poor dog being surrendered! NOTHING IN THIS WORLD CAN PART ME FROM MY DOGS,NOTHING!! Praying for this dog!!!

    • We all share your concerns, Cynthia. Houston has a horrible street dog problem and it’s not caused by puppy mills. It’s caused by a cultural problem in certain parts of the city that does not believe in spaying and neutering and people who let their dogs roam freely. There are many rescue groups who work tirelessly in Houston to combat the problem, but the problem is just overwhelming. Lucky for Max, he was saved because caring people pledged money to a rescue who saved him.

  9. Prolly forced to get rid of it by his girlfriend told him that it the dog or her, the dude chose the girl prolly due to hormones and now due to that fool hardy choice this dog is potentially going to be euthanized.

If I wasn’t financially stuck I would go over there and take that poor animal as a friend for my little dog.

    • I hope you aren’t right, anyone that gives up their dog for a girlfriend or boyfriend are crazy! Somewhere down the road the boyfriend/girlfriend will be gone because of some other issue and you have lost your faithful dog forever! Love me love my dog, or take a hike!

    • Tony, the story above mentioned the landlord! Why you came up with the girlfriend is beyond me. Most apartment complexes and rentals do not allow certain breeds because of how destructive they can be to the dwelling. This young man probably didnt let the apartment manager know he had a pit bull. Unfortunately pit bulls are not always welcome at rentals. Its really ridiculous though that the apt manager can not just charge him more a mnth instead of making him get rid of his dog. To me, i would rather move and find me somewhere else to live than give up my kids

  10. I am so sorry for Max and his family. I have 2 pits they are terrific dogs. Id move before id give them up.wish they could stay together. Its not the breed. Its how it is treated.Just like children. Please people rethink this maddness on dog breeds.

    • Sorry, I could not/can not get my comment to connect to my FB page even though I have posted on your page here before 🙁

    • So now I can dislike the parents! What kind of parents do this to their son? They should have found a residence that allowed the dog, I realize it’s hard but it can be done, you don’t just make your kid turn in his best friend! Yes it is heartbreaking!

  11. Any way to get him to Arkansas, I will keep him till owner finds a place to live that will allow hem to stay. Want to speak to owner, who can set it up, reach me on facebook

    • Not sure Cookie why you are always so critical of my reports. You are right however – I do not report a dog has been rescued or saved until I get verification. The Facebook thread for this sweet dog is still very much active, and we are all hoping for some good news soon.

  12. SO SAD, such a stigma about this breed too.
sad, really is hard to accept they can allow this, taking a ‘child’ away from someone, no that does not happen, same thing for a loved animal!
