Yes, Dusty is a dog: Left to languish in agony and dumped at high kill shelter

Late Tuesday evening was just the beginning of the luckiest day in the short life of Dusty. How long he languished in the agony of his itchy and infected flesh is unknown; the friendly bulldog mix didn’t even have one hint of the color of his once luxurious, shiny coat.

Discovered in a small, rural shelter in South Texas with an unusually high euthanasia rate, Dusty’s run of luck started to take shape. Less than a month ago, most dogs were killed after the required “stray hold.” Fortunately a recent change in shelter procedures has allowed more rescue groups to participate – thus resulting in more adoptions and ultimate saves. Had Dusty been in the shelter a few short weeks ago, his story would never have been told. The young dog would have become a statistic in the 1.5 million shelter animals euthanized annually.

For two days Dusty suffered in the shelter, and fortunately his photo was tagged on Facebook; advocates rallied for his rescue and after pleading with the animal control personnel at the shelter, Dusty was released to Rescue Dogs Rock NYC and rushed to an emergency veterinarian:

“Maybe this was Dusty’s best day as we were alerted to his plight when he was dumped at the shelter and immediately agreed to help him. Sadly, Dusty is in very critical condition and upon rescue, Dusty had to be immediately transported to an emergency hospital for immediate and life saving medical treatment,” wrote Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC on  the group’s Facebook page. “We will do everything we possibly can to save his life.”

Dusty has been receiving a blood transfusion and remains on intravenous and appropriate pain medication. He will need 24/7 hour care and must remain at the hospital. To help Dusty, donations can be sent:

Make sure to take a moment and watch the beginning of Dusty’s new life. How anyone can allow their dog to be in this condition is heartless.

  4. I usually do donate a small amount to every animal in need reported by David Hendrickson’s site, as I did for this poor baby. I can’t give much but I do give what I can. I don’t make the mistake of thinking small amounts don’t make a difference because every little bit helps if a lot of people think this way and do! Good luck to this baby and as usual, RESCUE DOGS DO ROCK…rescuedogsrocknyc
