When the world lets you down: Abandoned puppies barely able to survive

On Friday, a tiny German shepherd mix, no more than four-months-old had nearly given up and just accepted her fate. No one knows how long she had been running, but she had no more fight in her; the world had let her down. What could be expected from such a young puppy trying desperately to survive along the country roads of San Antonio, Texas? Neighbors said there were two more puppies and their mother, but no one was sure how many of the dogs were still alive.

Animal advocate, Leslie Ysuhuaylas asked fellow rescuers to help. When the volunteers spotted the first puppy, she had barely escaped being struck by a car; the vehicle never stopped nor slowed down to check. Trying to elude rescuers because she was so frightened, the puppy ran into a ditch.

Rescue Dogs Rock NYC were called to help. Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of the organization, didn’t have to think twice before she offered full support:

“We were not just going to sit back and do nothing,” Stacey posted on the Rescue Dogs Rock NYC’s Facebook page. “We asked fellow rescuers to help and search for this puppy wandering alone on the South Texas streets. Last night they went back to the site and thankfully were able to catch the puppy who we have now named Bethanie, and we learned that Bethanie has a family living in the woods. She led our team to them late last night, and they were able to catch her sister Birdie. We believe there are more siblings and a mom which we will of course keep looking for.”

By late Saturday evening, Bethanie and Birdie were both on their way to an emergency veterinarian hospital for life saving care. Bethanie is lethargic, and both puppies suffer from severe skin infections as well as mange. Sadly, the world lets far too many dogs down. Bethanie and Birdie are the lucky ones, and in this area of Texas, this is the way of life for far too many dogs who deserve so much more.

“We are only trying to do a small part and help where we can,” explained Stacey.  “On Monday the puppies will be transferred to our San Antonio vet partner for long term care.”

  1. Just babies, what in the hell is wrong with people, can’t you see the suffering and struggle of a animal in need or are you to calloused that you are unable to feel the fear and desperation of the innocent? This is why I dislike most humans, their just plain mean!

  2. To to the people if Texas, wakeup take care of your pups. Seems you either putg them in high kill shelter or leave them in streets

    • I have to agree with you, too many of these stories coming out of TEXAS! What is going on there? I hope they find the poor mother and other babies alive!

  3. J’en ai marre de voir toutes ces monstruosités, il faut que cela s’arrête et pour qu’il n’y en ait plus, il faut abattre tout ces barbares. Pas de pitié pour les assassins.

  4. So sad! We kill millions of dogs in our shelter systems instead of working on ways to bring down the over population of dogs!! Killing them by the millions for having no homes is like putting a band aid on 10 inch long deep cut and expecting it to stop the bleeding!!! These poor little souls!!!! I often wonder what the good Lord thinks about the disrespect and destruction of innocent animals lives!! Smh

  5. Sadly there is far too much of this everywhere, not only TX. Where I happen to be Houston, Austin. I do what I am able, and being in CO now, have seen way too many of the same often in the freezing weather. We all need to do what we can leading by example. I have seen progress, not enough yet! Bless all who do SO much! KEEP CALM AND RESCUE ON!!! Thanks so much for all you do!

  6. Once again if it weren’t for Rescue Dogs Rock NYC Bethanie & Birdie would both be lying in a road dead – I hope they are able to find the rest of their siblings and get them to safety since apparently some people are more than willing to mow down innocent animals and keep right on going – those are the ones who deserve fatal accidents (hopefully)..
