According to Thursday’s NWA Homepage, a woman in Fayetteville, Arkansas, was arrested this week after dozens of animals were discovered living in filthy conditions at her home. The woman, 63-year-old Vickie West, advised the authorities that she pulled cats and dogs who were at “high risk” of being euthanized from shelters in Texas with the intent to transfer them to rescue groups.

The authorities discovered a cat, 25 dogs and the bodies of three deceased dogs, inside of West’s home at East Missouri Way on January 10, reported the Democrat-Gazette. Conditions inside of her home were poor enough that responding authorities had to don protective gear. The home was reported to be covered with urine and feces and many of the dogs were thin and filthy from animal waste.

West willingly surrendered all of the animals to animal control – they have been returned to the shelters where they were originally adopted from, or have found new homes.

Officials were tipped off to the concerning situation by Texas rescue agencies who noted that she had been adopting a high number of animals from area animal shelters. West is facing two counts of aggravated cruelty to a dog and two counts of cruelty to animals.

  1. If you can’t care for them properly, don’t take them! That is cruelty. You can’t save them all, unfortunately!

  2. I suppose her intentions were honorable, but if you can’t take care of them why do it? There is no excuse not picking up after the dogs and cleaning up after them let alone letting them die and lay there!. Just sick!

  3. I amazed that these shelters weren’t suspicious how one lone person can rescue so many dogs. Thank goodness the Texas rescue agencies were on the ball.

  4. Examples like these are anathema to those of us who truly “rescue”, and make it so much more challenging (if not impossible) to adopt from afar!

My precious companions have come to me from AZ, CA, GA, MN, MO, OH and WI – with absolutely NO possibility of return: We work through any conceivable conflicts, to exist harmoniously as a single “pack”, and although I would endlessly adopt from the innnumerable others in desperate need, I prudently recognize the need to conserve and provide adequate financial resources to assure lives of comfort and health for all of those to whom I have already promised “forever”…

May those unfortunate souls “returned” (and all others), find truly loving homes…

  5. All I want is a few minutes with this sick bitch and all animal abusers and they would never have a normal life again. I really hate these unhumans hope they rot and die.

  6. This is what happens when good intentions go bad! Now these poor dogs are back in the same high kill shelters in worse conditions than they left in! So now either get adopted real fast or they die!

  7. Her intentions ‘may’ have been honorable BUT her environment was vile, and she just left animals to die – I have serious doubts about her ability and mental health. No one who REALLY cares about animals does not allow them to live like that. Now these poor dogs are back in the same kill shelter as before so she did no good whatsoever. She did these animals no favors at all.
