A tragic situation in Allegan County, Michigan ended with a woman killed as she was hit by a car trying to save her dog on Wednesday night. The Michigan State Police responded to the accident at the intersection of 144th Avenue and 32nd Street where Jennifer Counterman, 45, had been hit.

According to MLive, Jennifer loved animals and her six-year-old yellow Labrador retriever named Dakota had been her best friend. Even Jennifer’s grown children joked how Jennifer cooked eggs every morning and traveled with Dakota wherever she went. Tragically, the woman was hit by a vehicle as she tried to help her dog who had been hit by a different car coming from the opposite direction.

“She died trying to save him from the middle of the road. She was my mom, my go-to person, my hero, my superman,” her son Tim Counterman told MLive. “She loved her animals, her kids, her family. She was just amazing.”

Dakota died also, and on Thursday he was buried in his favorite spot in the family’s backyard.

The case remains under investigation. Rest in peace Jennifer and Dakota. We are deeply saddened when we lose our compassionate friends.

  2. I am so sorry you lost your wonderful mother… She died trying to save her precious companion,as she would have for you…They are together I’m sure????????????

  3. This makes me cry. We have so many abusers and to read this…so tragic yet beautiful. But I get it. I myself ran after a shelter dog Friday after he accidently got out of his collar. He wasn’t even my personal dog. I never looked running across the street. I just didn’t think about it, focusing on the dog. That’s what she did! RIP Jennifer and Dakota.????????????❤

  4. If this was an animal abuser nothing seems to happen to them. This is a real shame happening to a wonderful person.

  5. There simply are no words to express the depth of our sorrow at this compounded tragedy.
At least they passed together, and crossed the Bridge in each other’s company…
Rest-in-peace, dear Jennifer – along side your beloved Dakota.

  6. For eternity Jennifer and Dakota will have each other! To have each other for eternity makes it so much better they will feel the sun warming them! There will always be plenty of food to eat, cold clean water to drink! Good nite Jennifer and Dakota

  7. Crying for Jennifer and Dakota. It should be the animal abusers who get hit by cars and die, not those who love the animals and does so much for them. Prayers for Jennifer’s family. She and Dakota will be together forever.
