Woman busts out Mercedes window to save dog

It was hot outside on Friday afternoon when Shawna Harch happened upon a dog’s cries coming from inside of a parked car in Portland, Oregon. According to KGW News, Harch could see a small dog locked inside of a crate in the parked Mercedes.

Whoever left the little dog inside of the car failed to even leave the windows cracked and it was apparent that the dog was distressed in the heat. Harch tried to find the dog’s owners, and then she tried to set off the vehicle’s alarm, but failed.

Desperate to save the dog from suffering any further, Harch took matters into her own hands – she found a car jack and began to beat on the window of the Mercedes. Other people in the area told her to hit the corner of the window to shatter it and finally, she succeeded – busting out the window and pulling the crated dog out to fresh, cooler air.

The dog’s owners finally came outside from an apartment complex nearby – they were surprised that the dog didn’t have enough cool air inside of the car. Harch was not criticized by the dog’s owners for breaking out the window of the Mercedes – instead, they thanked her for rescuing the dog.

One day before Harch was forced to make the life-or-death choice to bust a window to save the dog, a law was passed in Oregon allowing people to break out a window to rescue a pet or child from a hot vehicle.

People who find themselves faced with the decision are supposed to call 9-1-1 and notify the authorities first – in Harch’s case, she did phone the authorities first. She made the decision to take matters into her own hands after she was advised that it would take awhile for the police to arrive at the scene.

  1. Thankful that the Law had been passed : BUT SOUNDS Like SHAWNA had the PRESENCE of MIND to DO the RIGHT thing by this little dog!!! THE owner’s KNEW THEY DID PUT THEIR LITTLE ANIMAL IN DANGER THUS KEEPINF THEIR YAP”S SHUT!!!! WE NEED MORE SHAWNA”S !!!!

  2. Yes we are not suppose too.
    But if you have to,
    Don’t hit straight on,
    Hit at angle,
Remember to close your eyes, press your lips , turn away and hit it with all your might.
You’ll get it on the 3rd try.
Be ready to run like mad or defend your action.

  3. What in the hell is wrong with people? This story makes no sense, the owner didn’t know the dog was in the car? Was surprised it didn’t have enough air? SMH

  4. I DONT CARE ONE BIT THAT THOSE PEOPLE THANKED THE WOMAN FOR BREAKING OUT THE WINDOW, I WOULD OF ASKED THE PEOPLE TO SURRENDER THE DOG. IF THEY SAID NO, I WOULD OF WALKED AWAY WITH IT. IF SOMEONE IS THAT DAMN STUPID THEY DONT DESERVE TO HAVE AN ANT AS A PET!!!! PLEASE EVERYONE DO THE SAME AS THIS WOMAN DID TO SAVE THAT DOG. THERES NO TIME TO BE LOOKING FOR OWNERS, THOSE PEOPLE ARE NO KIND OF GOOD OWNER ANYWAYS AND DO NOT DESERVE TO HAVE ANY ANIMAL!!!!

  5. Those idiots should be thanking this woman for saving the pets life! Actually these people should have this little one taken away from them! Think people leave your pets at home while you are running errands or visiting people! Too many pets die each year because they were left in a locked car in the hot weather! Its real simple even parked in the shade the temperature in a closed car will go over 100 in a matter of minutes! If you see a pet locked in a car break that window and save the life of that pet!

  6. Another summer of idiots who don’t realize their pets could die in a hot car. How do people NOT know this? I would have done the same as this woman, and if I were breaking the law, so be it! If it saves a dog or child, I will gladly pay the price!

  7. The owners take one on the chin. I’m glad they understand the danger their dog was in due to their lack of common sense. Thanks to the woman that took action, you are a hero.

  8. Thanks to this brave girl SHAWNA; this animal is safe. I just hope the dog truly is safe with these owners though; this was very careless, irresponsible and STUPID of them. Still I am happy to see someone actually rescue/save an animal! So there are still good people that love animals out there somewhere, thank goodness.
