Woman accused of strangling puppy

A woman in Salem, Oregon, is accused of a heinous act of cruelty against an innocent puppy. According to the Statesman Journal, 43-year-old Meagan Lafferty was staying with a couple after her own apartment was damaged in a fire on Monday morning. The displaced woman is accused of strangling her host family’s nine-week-old puppy to death shortly after she was invited into their home.

The puppy’s owner told the authorities that Lafferty picked up the puppy and ignored a request to put him down. The woman then allegedly held the puppy down on a recliner and wrapped her hands around his neck – the owner called 9-1-1, but help for the young pup did not arrive in time.

The puppy’s owner told the local authorities that Lafferty said “I am God, and I am here to end his misery” while she was strangling the helpless puppy. According to the report, Lafferty’s hands were still gripped around the puppy’s neck when the police arrived – she allegedly refused their commands and they had to pry her off of the deceased puppy.

The couple who owned the puppy is understandably distraught – they were trying to help their neighbor in a time of need and are in shock that their act of kindness was met with such shocking cruelty.

  1. I can’t even imagine this. Trying to be nice to someone like that and this was their reward? I hope their other neighbors appreciate what nice people this couple is.

  2. This is A seriously ” Psychotic ” be it drug, alcohol, induced or she is overmedicating herself!!! Good God didn’t the neighbors notice She was Not STABLE!!! Their poor little dog paid the price for their attempts to help her… This woman more than likely set her place afire , and may have torched the home of these people along with killing them too!!! I hope they sent her Ass to a Mental Ward ASAP!11

    • I am (unfortunately) one of her neighbors, for the last two years. Not only does everyone who resides here know how mentally disturbed she is but she is very intelligent on the subject, which makes her very dangerous as well. Management has been told repeatedly that she is dangerous and not just based on prior actions, but what the woman was capable of for over 2 yrs! She’s also been well known to local police but seems to be bulletproof when it comes down to having her removed. With regard to the wonderful neighbors that came to her aid immediately following the fire, they are a newly married, new parents and younger couple thats very involved with their church. They were not only doing what they thought was the right thing to do but but assist fire and police by keeping her in one location as the fire was being extinguished. I can tell you that they are very good people who have almost certainly never expected nor ever seen something this devastating in their lives. Be it fear, shock or both, they were very smart not to engage this much larger women in the end! Such an amazing young couple and my heart and prayers go out to them every day!

      • Thank you SO much for writing and making things a little more clear!!! I am a registered nurse of over 25 years and mostly worked in Drug and Alcohol Rehab. also in a facility for female youth state run. adjudicated from age 10 to 21… I could see the ‘psychotic ” woman was quite large and also people do not realize that when a phase of psychosis some people have superhuman strength and they more than likely would have gotten them selves killed… I certainly hope the Judge and the legal authorities “get their Poop in a Group” this person SERIOUSLY is a threat to not only herself. BUT TO SOCIETY.. SHE could do this to a small child, or anyone…. The management of the complex, needs to be served with a petition from everyone who rents and an ATTORNEY needs to be contacted for the Safety for every living being…. That little puppy could be the first of many victims!!!! I really do feel sad for the young couple that tried to intervene , this fall under the old saying NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED”

      • I feel for these “good” people, but this shows what trying to help a psycho can lead to. Why, if everyone knew this woman is trouble didn’t someone warn them? If the police are aware of this woman’s problems then they should have stepped in and handled the woman and not put this couple and their child in danger. She could have very well done this to their child or one of them. If as you say they were smart not to engage her, then what would have happened had she gone after one of them? I doubt very much they would have stood there then and allowed it to happen. I feel for them for what they have been through and feel they have probably learned a hard lesson.

      • Thank you Penny! Anyone who has dealt with mental illness directly or gain experience through work will agree, more often than not, the best way to engage these individuals is too have as much knowledge as they do regarding their illness. By having that information, you are able to control the interaction, minimize the contact which will reduce possible reactions! Since the behavior can be SO unpredictable from person to person, its just much safer to know how to avoid “trigger” situations all together. That being said, I find it rather disturbing the amount of people who say “Why didn’t they…” or “I would have…”in this situation when I doubt that many of them have ever been in that situation in their own lives. Easy to say could of, would of , should of when its not you! This young couple does not live in the apartments but in a house across the street. They were not privey to her daily behavior or what goes on here.Unaware, unarmed and outsized, she contacted the authority’s the moment she started acting strangely NOT after she was already in the act! She made the call, protected her newborn before she knew what was about to happen. Lumping their unbiased act of kindness with her despicable actions is uncalled for! Since we currently do not live like “Minority Report” police cannot arrest or detain her for what this disturbing woman was about to do. All involved were warned but could have bever predicted anything that followed. Our very sincere young couple deserve some compassion and respect because however the outcome… Their compassion for others doesn’t discriminate!

  3. It’s pretty bad when you can’t even take in someone…….good deeds should NOT be punished. RIP little baby, so sorry for the poor couple….

  4. This insanity of killing animals, starving them, physically severely abusing them has become rampant in our society. What has gone wrong in our society to make people so cruel, sadistic and mentally unstable?

  5. This woman is AWFULLY DISTURBING in her own mind! She Needs a psychological evaluation! That poor puppy didn’t do anything to her! It was only a baby! Give me a break! WHEN ARE THESE PEOPLE GOING TO BE PUNISHED FOR ALL THE WRONGFUL DEATHS OF INNOCENT ANIMALS!??? IT HAS TO STOP! ONE PERSON AT A TIME!

    • If only they had already passed the law, that is currently being written, declaring pets as members of your family and not property…she’d be looking an entirely different charges and years before they let her out!

  6. She is one fucked up woman! The neighbor I am sure wanted to help her, unknowingly she had big time issues. No excuse for her to kill a dog. I think her comment was purposely used to think she was insane.

  7. No good deed goes unpunished, I just don’t understand why they stood there and let her do it! I would have been beating on her to let the pup go! This is horrible, I guess they best not be so giving the next time!

    • People are so messed up….if the owners had started beating on her, she probably would have had them charged with assault. I would say “go ahead” because there’s no way I would have let my puppy be strangled to death without me trying to save him.

      • I wouldn’t be able to stand there and watch either, someone goes after someone I love this Momma goes into attack mode, I wouldn’t care what consequences I faced as long as I protected my own!

  8. I’m baffled by the fact the owner did nothing. Yes, this woman looks like a beast from Shrek, but there is nothing that I would not have tried to get that woman off of my dog; even if it took a bat across her back.

  9. Someone please explain to me how these useless human beings stood there and WATCHED this waste of human flesh strangle this puppy to death? I would have taken a knife to her, bitten her, knocked her unconscious, done anything to free my pet. She was a big woman? There were TWO of you COWARDS. TWO !! You stood there and this puppy looked to you to save it and you LET this woman kill your dog. I sincerely hope these owners hear this puppy crying in their dreams from now until the day they die. There is no power on earth that would have kept me from taking this puppy from this waste of oxygen. The police would have arrived to drag her beaten, bloody, unconscious body out of my house. The human race is either perverted, cowardly or lazy. Any wonder I prefer the company of dogs???

  10. This is too bazaar. We aren’t getting all of the story. The up side is Oregon will fry her unless she’s mental, which is exactly what is sounds like.

  11. Wth? is wrong with people nowadays? I’m sorry this happened but I tell you what if it was me I’d kill the Bitch before I’d let her kill my dog. This is the Thanks they get for their kind deed. RIP Poor puppy, people failed you..

  12. Didn’t couple notice she was strange ? Where they afraid of the woman? Yes you would do your best to save pet! Then get done yourself by law ! Madness is bubbling away

  13. Why would anyone wait for the cops!? That bit** would of needed the cops when I was done with her! Poor puppy suffered and ugly death at the hands of evil! Smdh
