Just a few days ago, Andrea McNee, the animal rescuer coordinator for South Florida Animal Rescue Network, a Florida non-profit serving dogs and horses in need in the South Florida area, penned an angry message to the owners of a young Akita surrendered to Miami-Dade Animal Services – an extremely crowded open-admittance shelter. As Andrea watched the young dog shaking uncontrollably in his cage – knowing he had been abandoned and his family would not come back for him, she felt obligated to address that family and wrote the heart wrenching note:

“To the family who dumped Raiden #A1777880 at our local KILL shelter, I hope this post reaches you. Two years ago you thought buying an Akita puppy was the coolest thing ever but didn’t plan what to do with him in the event of having to move. Now he sits there shaking like a leaf, because even though he is a good boy he knows you have left him there to die. He has not eaten or potty; he simply can’t move because he is petrified. We want to help but we may not be able to. There are alternatives to a kill shelter that you probably didn’t consider because it is easier to think that another wonderful family will adopt him. Sorry to break the news but the REAL WORLD doesn’t work that way. The commitment you made to Raiden the day you brought him home as a cute puppy has been broken; you failed him.”

The volunteer’s words resonated throughout social media as Raiden’s photo, showed the dog sadly waiting behind the bars of his cage for the family who would never return. Just one day later however, Raiden’s future changed. On Wednesday, the lonely pup had already been neutered and adopted. Late that afternoon Raiden headed home with his new family.

“HAPPY TO REPORT THAT THIS BABY IS HEADING HOME WITH HIS NEW FAMILY! MANY THANKS TO EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO SHARED AND ADVOCATED FOR HIM. YOU ALL MADE THIS POSSIBLE!!! HIS SMILE SAYS IT ALL!,” Andrea told the Pet Rescue Report, and all of us here couldn’t be happier.

Our canine companions are life long commitments. Be a responsible pet parent – spay and neuter and make sure you keep your promise to keep your pets safe. That’s how we roll!

  1. I Love Stories that have a Happy Ending. I have a Senior Dog who is my Joy of my Heart. I would NEVER turn Her over to a Shelter. Especially a High Kill Shelter where the workers have no Compassion for Animals.

  2. I’m so very happy for Raiden! It’s amazing the number of humans who think the shelter is the return slot for pets! When you get a pet it’s for the life of that pet! There is no such thing as it’s the wrong size, or color! These are living breathing feeling beings! Think before you get a pet, if you can’t make a commitment for the life of the pet then don’t get it!

    • So True!! Pets are family members, too. Do people think u can dump their kid off for some stupid reason,,,, they can’t,, so they shouldn’t dump pet, also, family! Makes me hate people!!

  3. I’d live in my car with my furbabies before giving them up. I hope the original “owners” get a visit from Karma – and soon. Thank goodness this sweet dog found a loving home. Praying that every other dog and cat sitting in kill shelters find the same, but sick to my stomach knowing they won’t. We need to keep pushing, working to make this country…the entire world…no kill.

  4. What is wrong with people! When the phrase “acting like animals” is used to describe the animals should be insulted!! Ghandi had it right, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
