UPDATE: Layla’s hours were numbered but she held her favorite stuffy to feel safe

Layla had been on death row scheduled for humane euthanasia on Tuesday afternoon at the Brooklyn facility of Animal Care Centers of New York City. It didn’t matter that Layla wasn’t an affectionate snugly pup, and it wasn’t that all adoption care centers aren’t constantly promoting adoptions; it’s that no one came to rescue this dog. The shelter suggested Layla had special needs. How would Layla know? Who could be sure, but she would never let go of the only thing she had left in this world – her stuffy. She carried the toy down the street and through the yard; it made her feel safe.

Once upon a time, Layla played with five young children –  the little ones aged two and seven were her favorites; she followed them everywhere. Barely out of “puppyhood,” Layla needed time to unwind along with patience and love in order to become a model canine citizen. Barely a year old, the dog had been surrendered to the shelter because the family had too many pets. Because she had been the last one brought into the home, she had been the first one booted out. In addition, she was never taught the guidance and socialization skills necessary for a young dog to learn, and when Animal Care Centers of New York City recommended the dog be listed as “rescue only,” Layla’s chances to find a home were greatly diminished.

Although Layla’s plight seemed hopeless, animal advocates would have no part of giving up. All day, the puppy’s story garnered social media attention; all day messages flooded into the Pet Rescue Report’s email box begging for information wanting to know if Layla had been adopted.

At 5:00, Jackie O’Sullivan and Stacey Silverstein, co-founders of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, rescued Layla.

  1. This story is why I have a monthly donation going to Rescue Dogs Rocks NY. They are wonderful people. I teared up this morning when I thought I was going to read that this dog was put down. I tried to take him, but the rules did not allow her to travel. There has to be homes for ALL of these dogs. They deserve love as they did not ask to be brought into the world.

      • I am don’t to 1 old gal that I rescued 3 yrs ago. I have never been without a dog, up to 4 at a time. But when this dear friend goes I will be taking a break. Seeing this makes me want to rethink my plan. So glad Layla is safe. She’s beautiful. I don’t understand people excusing a pet because they bit off more then they could chew. Should have considered that ahead of time. I pray she finds a wonderful home. God Bless all who helped keep her safe and all the people who do what they can every day to see these dear animals get a happy loving furever home. Thank you

  2. I wish we could save all dogs that are in shelters from being put down and at least be able to live out their lives, but it is so sad we can’t, too many dogs not enough people who want to adopt or have more than one dog.

  3. Anyone have any spare money to donate, Rescue Dogs Rocks NYC is the place it should go. They are heroes in my book!

  4. Rescue Dogs Rocks, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I now know that good things happen in this world because there are fabulous people who make it worthwhile living in. Thank you for saving the baby from the edge of no return. I suggest everyone post your heartfelt gratefulness on their Facebook page.

Now for the matter of punishment for the scumbags who abandoned her. They better be looking over their shoulder as I am sure the authorities will visit justice on them. How can we have their remaining pets confiscated? Totally unfit worms.

  5. Oh, thank you, Jesus, for saving this hunk of love. But at the same time, I am so, sad that there are many others who were in that shelter with Layla, were not as lucky. They will never know love…:-( Saving all of them is an impossible task. And that is only one shelter among millions around the world. One death is one too many.

  6. Everyone should take up the cause to stop puppy mills from over breeding. Call your congressman and demand laws!!! Also donate to your city shelter to spay and neuter dogs and cats.

  7. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN RESCUE DOGS ROCK NYC FOR SAVING LAYLA AND GETTING HER OUT OF THE HANDS OF RISA WEINSTOCK – being a pit bull she would have been murdered in a heartbeat – Weinstock LOVES to kill pit bulls. YOU ARE ONE HELL OF AN ORGANIZATION WHO NEVER SAYS NO AND GIVES NEW LIFE TO THOSE YOU RESCUE.

  8. Thank you dear lord for helping safe this adorable pup, I am so happy for her, wishing her a loving home.
