Update: Jennie’s leg severed as dog tried to save herself from drowning

Tied up and abandoned by her owner as Hurricane Harvey closed in, Jennie used desperate measures to save herself from drowning. Although it is not clear how the dog’s leg became severed – was she tied up with a chain that became entangled with her leg or was there another explanation, she wandered helplessly around looking for help. Still in the southern Dallas area where Jennie was finally rescued, her gentle nature prevailed.

For over a week she suffered until rescuers arrived. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC were asked to help, and without hesitation, Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of the organization volunteered:

“This is what desperation and despair look like,” stated Stacey as she posted the heartbreaking photos of Jennie  on social media with the lower part of her leg missing. “Her owners left her tied like this and abandoned here. It’s miraculous she survived this horrific event. We rushed her to Blue Pearl Emergency Hospital in Spring Texas where she remains.”

On Wednesday, what remained of the dog’s partially gnawed leg was amputated.

“She… lost a lot of blood due to her injury and she’s had 2 blood transfusions already; one prior to surgery and one transfusion immediately after surgery. Jennie was so desperate to save her own life and break free that she literally sawed off her leg with the tie out,” stated Stacey. “Jennie’s act of pure desperation to live and how she had to survive is so sad and at the same time despicable, that her owners just left her to die a slow painful death. Sadly this cost Jennie her leg but thankfully she’s alive. Jennie holds no grudges and remains a sweet loving angel.”

Jennie is guaranteed never to suffer again, and when this very forgiving pup heals, she will be available for adoption. To help with her mounting medical expenses, donations can be made:

Her owners should be prosecuted and made to pay her vet bills. There is no sane reason for this. She is part of the family. Are you going to tie a family member to a tree and leave them to die?? You just did. Now let the law straighten you out.

Most of us are aware there was no flooding in Dallas, but, people in that area were warned about hurricane Harvey hitting Texas and still evacuated leaving their pets behind!!!!!!

Rescue Dogs Rock NYC is a reputable rescue. They take the worst cases and operate with all volunteers. Don’t make comments about something you know nothing about. This poor dog is one of many in their care.

RDR comes to the rescue yet again. This dog was so desperate to get away no thanks to so-called owners. What fright and despair these animals must have felt. These owners need to be severely punished and made to pay for the treatment of the animals they left behind. I don’t care if they just went through a hurricane. If this were their child, would they tie them up and leave them behind?

I have to wonder how anyone can know for a fact, this dog was left tied and abandoned? She may have escaped from somewhere definitely. For anyone’s guess, she could have been tangled in rubble and the leg chewed by debrie. Just curious. Who supplies the “back story”?

She was found wandering is what I was told. The explanations from rescuers state there was evidence of something constricting on her lower leg. Her pain, however must have been unbelievable. ;(
