Had it not been for the extraordinary efforts of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC late last week, Rupert’s story would never have been told; the one-year-old emaciated puppy – too weak to stand or barely lift his head had to be rushed to the organization’s specialty veterinarian hospital for emergency life-saving treatment. Just five days later, Rupert remains at the hospital, and although he is still in need of around the clock care and monitoring, the veterinarians and staff remain moderately optimistic.

On Tuesday morning, Jackie O’Sullivan, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock updated the puppy’s condition on the organization’s Facebook page:

“…he’s able to stand for short periods with some support. He’s gone from 23 to 24.5lbs which is not a lot, but yesterday’s abdominal ultrasound ruled out any major issues. He remains anemic, EPI & other possible GI issues have been ruled out, but the medical team believes he has a bleed somewhere in there. Rupert was also full of parasites which he’s being treated for. The last concerning thing is that he has a nodule on one of his lungs. They are hoping the nodule is infection related, but of course worst case, it could be cancer.”

Six-months ago, Rupert had been adopted by a family from the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS). The energetic and healthy six-month-old puppy happily frolicked into his new owners’ arms – positive his young life would be one of love. Sadly, that was all too short-lived.  Late last week, Rupert was returned to BARCS as a skeleton; he could not stand or walk and was close to death. An animal cruelty investigation was initiated. According to the adopter, their puppy would eat, but he just didn’t gain weight. When adopted, Rupert weighed 33 pounds; when brought back to the shelter, the emaciated puppy weighed 22 pounds.

  1. I sure hope those people are going to be charged. Poor pup. What the fuck is wrong with people, its as if they adopted him with the intention of not feeding him. They only had him 6 months. Aarrrgggggg that really pisses me off ????????????????????????????????????????????

  2. I dont need to do xrays and ultrasounds to know Rupert was starved intentionally! I dont know what sort of background check was done on the scum who adopted Rupert but it was not enough, nor was there a surprise drop in by the rescue group who allowed this scum to take Rupert! If there had been Rupert would not have had to suffer like this! Please to all shelters and rescue groups, make sure you do a very through back ground check including vet references and a home visit before prospective adopters can take an animal! Make sure you make 4 to 5 surprise drop ins just to make sure all is as it should be! If these steps had been followed Rupert would not be fighting for his life right now!

  3. I wish he could talk. This condition didn’t happen overnight. Obviously, he had no medical care. Of course the owners would lie. This pup was in their care and need to be held accountable.

  4. Thank you for the update, however, it upsets me that the owners opted to dump Rupert instead of bringing him to the vets. Obviously these people should not adopt any animals if they’re not willing to take the responsibilities, love, care and EXPENSES it takes to own one.

  6. These so called ‘owners’ should be held responsible for Rupert’s condition and made to pay for every cent of his medical care – and given the same consideration they gave him – NONE! If it weren’t for Rescue Dogs Rock NYC Rupert would not be alive. Hope he recovers completely and gets the safe loving home he never had.

  7. Best wishes going out to Rupert on his future! I hope they investigate further into those pathetic people that lied and said he wouldn’t eat. They obviously starved the poor guy!

  8. Rupert has definitely been not given enough food. To go from healthy to emaciated in such a short period definitely says he has been starved, and that can only happen one way, DELIBERATE ABUSE. His former owners need to be charged, and quickly, so that they can’t flee the wrath that they deserve.

  9. Doesn’t anybody in these shelters or care facilities use one of our basic gifts that we have called intuition.
I’m sorry but as a person who is in service to humankind in healthcare I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt I have NEVER been wrong in my intuition and assessment on human behaviour.
my retard radar is constantly on and I cannot believe that these people in these facilities don’t have at least one member of their staff who has the capability of using very basic intuition .
Another amazing thought here is to have updates and keep in touch with your adoptees.
Here in our high schools children are required to have 80 hours of community service get some of your text savvy students to do follow-up calls.
Honestly they should never ever have happened .
The people responsible should be made to pay restitution

    • I COULDN’T AGREE More with YOU!!! Being in the medical field myself it is not only taught ,BUT self learned behavior intuition in interpersonal action and conservation and communication with the people you are dealing with to have the skills to detect ” WOW !!! there could possible be and issue of some sort with this individual or family… Such as ” What a great looking pup! We had a couple like him a couple year’s ago before they both got hit by cars”!!!! Stupid is Stupid …
