It was a shocking discovery when a man out walking on Tuesday heard faint whimpering sounds in the area of Saint-Paul d’Abbotsford located in southwest Montreal. He went in search of the sounds, and what he found was shocking – a dog buried alive!  According to Monteregie SPCA  inspector, Linda Robertson, the man saw a paw sticking out of the ground as the dirt moved beside it.

The CtvNews reports the man pushed the dirt away and found the male Bull Mastiff still breathing and very much alive. He called 911, and officers rushed to the area and helped dig the dog out of his grave; a blanket had been wrapped around him. Claude Brodeur, who discovered the dog when he first spotted the paw, stated he walks the area nearly everyday, but because of the rain he had skipped a few days. Authorities helped  to uncover the dog and rushed him to a veterinarian in Chambly. It was hoped the dog would survive.

After examining the dog, veterinarians stated the dog had been strangled and hit over the head with a blunt object.

“He was wrapped in what looked like a sheet or a mattress covering,” stated Officer Robertson. “If the earth had been right on his head, he probably wouldn’t have survived as long as he did.”

By Tuesday evening, the dog’s heart beat and body temperature began to rise to normal values, and by Wednesday he had been eating and drinking on his own, yet was not able to walk. Later that day, however the dog had a seizure followed by a heart attack and died – most likely a result of trauma he had suffered.

The SPCA updated their Facebook page with the devastating news:

“Very sad news….our beautiful Boxer whom we named Sugar Ray, who fought so hard to survive, has passed away this afternoon. He was surrounded by the people who loved and cared for him – the vet techs and veterinarians of the Chambly Veterinarian Hospital.
We are heart broken as we know everyone will be. We are so grateful for your love and support towards Sugar Ray.
Details of Sugar’s death are not yet confirmed. We will update you as soon as we have more news.
Thank you…”

Sugar Ray did not have a microchip. Originally the shelter thought the dog was a Mastiff, but on Tuesday evening changed his breed identification to that of a Boxer. In 28 years of investigating animal cruelty cases, Officer Robertson never encountered a dog having been buried alive. Did his previous owner think the dog was dead when they buried him? The SPCA said the Surete du Quebec is investigating what happened and are trying to locate the owner. Anyone with information is asked to call 450.460.3075.

Rest in peace Sugar Ray. We are sorry you were let down by humans. Help this dog find justice. Be the voice for those who cannot speak.

  1. So sorry Sugar Ray didn’t make it, I was so hoping he would find a new happy life. Bless all those that helped him, he died surrounded by love.

  2. I am so vary disappointed to read this sad news. Boxers are the best dogs, too. Shame on the monster who did this to Sugar Ray. I hope horrible things come to the person who did this. RIP Sugar Ray. The only positive thing I can say is your last few days were spent in a loving and caring environment.

  3. What a terrible way to die!!!! Glad that he was surrounded with love at this last moments on Earth … the Putrid Vile Maggot that injured this beautiful. needs to Perish in a den of Rattlers…

  4. cameras every where is the only solution. a few years ago some a woman overdosed and the husband dumped her body in the woods. Camers on the trees. A pic of him and his car and arrested within 3= days. When we were young we thought big brother would be an infringment on our rights. No, it will assure safety and justice.
    Who knew?
    Now, Lets find out.

  5. This is another tale of heartbreaking violence against dogs. It is sickening how people torture these wonderful creatures. They deserve so much better. R.I.P. sweet boy.

  6. every day we curse the heartless pos owners who drop animals off at a shelter and walk away.
This is the real hard ass example of the real peice of shit humans. This was a well kept “fed” Dog. And one day a fellow care taker did this instead of taking him to a shelter to even give him a sliver of a chance at a new life.
His crime? Barking, eating a shoe, going to the bathroom because he was alone too long. This is the real piece of shit owner. The one who dosent have the Balls to bring a dog to a shelter.

  7. Crying, crying, crying my eyes out for this sweetheart!! The rage that is in my heart and soul I can barely contain!!! For the love of God…..WHY??? OH WHY??? I’m devastated over this and now wish I did not know this precious fur baby died. The worse part about reading these horrific stories of abuse, neglect, torture and death of these helpless voiceless dogs and cats is the inability to stop it!! The inability to make our lawmakers and the courts and every single resident in this country to DEMAND very very severe punishment for the very horrific crime called animal cruelty!!! I will NEVER NEVER EVER understand why more do not feel the way I do and to be so very outraged!! This story has affected me as bad as BoBo and little Suzy the Yorkie in Miami! I will not forget this sweetheart and the horrific treatment of him!! Some of these just get me more than others even tho every single case is mind boggling mortifying! I’m pretty sure Canada has very lax laws for this crime and shame on them! OMG! OMG! I’m crushed to hear about Sugar Ray,absolutely CRUSHED!!! The one and only thing that MIGHT ease my pain and horror is if the evil monster that inflicted this torture upon this fur baby is caught and p

    • When you go to sleep tonite. when you are just falling asleep.picture him, his face, those eyes call him to you for a moment.
reach out your arms and pull him to you and wrap your arms around him and pull him to your stomach in your loving sorroful embrace and comfort him and tell him how sorry you are for the brutality he endured. he thinks he was a bad boy. he was told many times he was bad but we know he is a goog dog. keep telling him he is a good boy.
Its important. Im afraid he may be stuck between the worlds. he may be wondering lost.when he died he will not go back to his home because he wasnt loved. there was a life time of abuse with his owners. if you do this 3 times and talk to him in your mind and tell him you will love him and he can stay with you and your pets. He will stay with you and he will feel your love and protection. watch your pets. they will look at what appears to be nothing.
When you have him after a while you can get him ready to go to the loved ones waiting for him.
when your ready. but you have to do this now. your crushing sadness and deep sorrow is powerful.
If you dont he will wounder around his shallow grave or be stuck in the vets office where he died.always thinking he was a bad boy and deserves this punishment for eturnity. bring him to your home. Even dead he still looks to show he is a good dog. suffering dosnt always end with death. You can do something about this cynthia. when i read your comment cynthia I was electrifyed and my head was filled with all these intrusive immiges. I felt compelled to connect with you. you showed true pitty with no useless violent anger. your the one. only you.

  8. I’m completely devastated by this dogs torture and death,my heart and soul is completely crushed!! Some stories just hit me harder than others and this is one of them!! Just like BoBo and Suzy the Yorkie in Miami, Sugar Rays story has deeply affected me and I will never ever forget him and what he went thru! RIP SUGAR RAY I WILL NEVER EVER FORGET U AND WHAT U HAD TO ENDURE OMG! I’m so upset over this

    • Yester day his suffering broke my heart.
today your suffering breaks my heart.
Be brave. Dont leave him hanging.

    • I think you should get into your car rite now and drive untill you find the first kill sheler . walk in and get your boxer. Someone in a hopless situation is waiting for you. whith out advocate.in a dreadful place.shes not a puppy she is waiting for deliverance.
Dont even comb your hair just get your coat and GO!
If you dont believe me look up the closest kill shelter and ask. do you have a 4yr old boxer female. when they say yes we do. dont wait.
Get the hell over there and get her. she will be the love of your life. your pitty also made me cry and then an immage of a man saving a hopless creature also came flooding into my mind. This man cries when he gets the dog to his car .They both cry and then their life together begins.
      GO!

      • I’ve been in rescue for decades, and maintain a forever home of ten (6 canine, 4 feline): Despite living on an SSDI, I would gladly have accepted yet another wretched soul in such circumstances, but please don’t belittle my compassion for a single, particular companion but proffering the “just go get another at some shelter” platitude?
I’ve done that – X 10 – repeatedly, throughout the years, and continuously pull, rehab, and place hapless souls…
Sometimes, certain particulars tug at heartstrings, and love knows no boundaries (my current “family” has come to me from AZ, CA, GA, MN, MO, OH, and WI)…

      • Dachshunds, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota ::: Love EACH & EVERY ONE of theses littler bugger’s with all our Heart’s & Soul !!! I know just where you are coming from… The other day I found a bran new Nikki riddled on the heal taken out of they box I had placed there about ten minutes prior on the hearth while I unloaded the truck and took out the trash…. several little eyes peering at me when I returned to the house… What can I say!!! except I laughed and cried at the same time while several little ones jumped, wiggled and snuggled , all of course were innocent !!!

      • I was so very moved by your original comment stephen. Im not a mind reader. I have no way of knowing details of your life and rescue. how you can find anything negitive or insulting to you and all your hard work is just baffeling.
I also felt heart Tugged and I spoke from my heart and mind. Belittle your compassion? But you feel free to belittle mine? Maybe, just maybe , my words made some other person go find their true love.
Thats the whole point of this site.

      • Penny, i dont know what a little nikki is but I have a feeling you have just made room for more in your extended pet and human alliance. Now your tugging my Heart.

  9. People who abuse innocent animals any kind of way don’t deserve to be alive. How can they even continue living or sleeping in the night???? What did the poor dog do to end up this way?

  10. I hope they find the person/s that hurt this dog. It is such a sad ending for him as he had tried so hard to survive.

  11. I sincerely hope that the authorities remain steadfast and diligent in bringing the person or persons who bludgeoned and buried Sugar Ray alive to justice. The abuse Sugar Ray suffered, the attack, the seizures.and ultimately the heart attack cries out for justice. Cruelty, turture, vindictiveness in hurting an animal to punish a person has escalated in many countries. I’m in the US and we have a major problem of it here.I personally fight, sign petitions, and contact senators. govenors, police, mayors, whoever I can get to listen. This must be addressed or it will escalate. My heart goes out to Sugar Ray, he didn’t deserve what he got and I pray that who did it is put in jail. The torture and bludgeoning deserves a stiff prison sentence.

  12. Strangled and hit on the head with a blunt object does not sound like he had a loving owner. Police have a psychopathic killer on the loose and I hope they find the monster soon.

  13. It just crushes my heart to hear that a POS human would have done this. Trying to hold back the tears! RIP Sugar Ray, now you are not hurting anymore. You are playing at the feet of the Lord….

  14. I doubt Montreal will do anything to find the hunk of sewer slime who buried Sugar Ray alive – Canada has proven it has little to no concern regarding animal cruelty – so hopefully, there is some street justice awaiting the subhuman who did this. Sugar Ray deserved MUCH better than to be treated like trash.

  15. May you R.I.P. sweet boy. May you remember the love you had in the last few days of your life instead of the suffering you endured by these vicious human. So sad and heartbroken. ???? How can anybody do such a thing to a defenseless fur-baby.

  16. BEAUTIFUL DOG!!! WE HOPE THAT ANYONE WHO HURTS OR KILLS LOVING ANIMALS WILL BE SENT TO HELL,FOREVER, BY GOD AND JESUS!!!!!! AMEN!!!!!

  17. RIP Sugar Ray. I hope they find the scum who did this. How can anyone hurt an animal? They are family? If you can’t take care of a dog then don’t get one period. Karma is a bitch. It may take awhile but she will get you. I hope she gets you hard.

  18. I hope the karma is equal to the suffering and the offense committed. This dog was a beautiful dog. Someone may have stolen it and thought this was pretty funny, someone may have tired of the unconditional acceptance and affection a dog has to offer due to age, someone was a self-serving, thoughtless, incapable of decency individual. I am hoping this comes around for the justice – even if they aren’t found. Doggie isn’t suffering any longer, but I was so hoping he would be ok and go to a decent, deserving home! So sad. Thank you to all those who tried very hard to help him. Thank you to the people who found him who were heros! You are an example of what people are supposed to be like!

  19. I actually despair at the human race sometimes when we see the atrocities they cause. This was vile in its extreme and you just hope the person who did it will endure and suffer worse pain!
